2002 GMC Sierra 1500HD Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

This is my first truck. I knew there was something special about it when i took it for a test drive. Boy was I right! I am the second owner, and it was garage kept and used as a second or third vehicle,because the mileage when ibought it was just over 130K, which, for a 15 year old truck, I found to below mileage. The truck is clean inside and out, and doesn’t feel like a big old pickup truck .. It drives as nicely as any luxury car ive ever driven. That was the first selling point, the comfort of the ride. The second selling point was that, unlike other truck or even SUV’s that i’ve Looked at, it has AC vents in the rear, which is perfect for my dogs. The third selling point was the ability to turn off the front passenger airbags, as I often have a dog riding shotgun with me, and in an accident, airbags will kill a dog. The BEST thing about my truck, which was a surprise to me (and apparently to the seller, because it was never mentioned) is that my 1500 Sierra is the HD model, capable of legally and safely towing up to 10,300 lbs, unlike the regular 1500, which can only tow around 8,000 lbs. (my friend’sdiesel F-350 can only tow 10K). Granted it has a few issues, like the gas gauge needing to be replaced, which is apparently common for that year. Apparently it’s the dash cluster, not the floater in the tank. No worries-i just top off the gas and reset the odometer to zero, and refill the tank after about 200-300 miles. For a V8, it gets great gas mileage....really. My combined mileage is around 16 mpg, and around 20 mpg freeway only.... Better than my mom’s newer xterra, which is a V6. I wish i had a garage to store it in, though. I love my truck and hope to keep it as nice as it was when I was lucky enough to find it in the first place.

I can’t believe that for my first truck, which was NOT advertsised as an HD, or known by me to be an HD, is ACTUALLY A HEAVY DUTY MODEL. I love my truck. I mean, REALLY love the d**n thing! It has vents for the rear passengers (my dogs) and I can manually turn off the front seat airbag (for my dogs). It totally drives like a car, SOOOOOOOO comfortable on the road. Everything about my truck is awesome. It looks good, feels good, tows well, handles well ... Comfy to sleep in when necessary. I pity the fool who hits me and dings my amazing truck!

This has been a very good reliable pick up. With over 200 thousand miles I have had no major repairs. I would buy another. Gas mileage is fair to good. Rides nice. If I could change anything it would be to make more leg room in back seat. I do mine own maintenance so it is nice that filters are easy to get to.

My vehicle is a fire truck red, 4x4, heavy duty 2002 GMC Sierra. The performance is amazing. I can haul a small trailer with no problem. It is very spacious and comfortable to sleep in if my family and I travel far. The only thing I would have to complain about is the wide turns and the a/c cannot really be felt from the back seats. Even though it is very comfortable I wish it maybe better cushions. After a long drive you tend to get tired quicker.

Right now the power steering pump is going out and the a/c control is messing up it only works on high.
