Alex Showalter
May 25, 2023

The 2017 BMW X5 lasts around 200,000 miles with some fuel pump and sunroof issues reported. At $36,980 to $61,540, it’s expensive, but worth the money for a very nice midsize luxury SUV.

likeFilled The Good
All of the engines provide good power for an SUV of its size, the handling is great and the first two rows are very comfortable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The available third row has limited legroom, repair costs can get expensive and the engines are not very efficient.

The BMW x5 is a great vehicle to purchase.
My BMW x5 is fun to drive. It is like a sports car SUV. It has been reliable so far. I am looking to purchase another x5 in January. The interior space is perfect for my family of 4. The exterior design is very attractive. The exterior look of the x 5 is what drew me to purchase this vehicle. The trunk space is perfect for any grocery/retail shopping trip. We took our x5 to the Smoky Mountains on vacation 6 months ago. It handled the winding, inclined roads incredibly well. It also handles the Illinois winter weather extremely well. This car is the best handling vehicle I've ever bought and I have had numerous vehicles before this one.

The BMW X5 is a leader in the luxury class. It offers a smooth ride and handles extremely well.
There are many blind spots. I miss having keyless entry and some other features. I also wish there were rear temperature controls.

BMW x5 2017 - a luxury SUV worth the price.
It is an excellent luxury suv, drives great, no problems so far. It is really fun to drive. It is very spacious. It is an SUV but handles like a sports car. Great for long trips with family, especially with the entertainment system in the back with two separate screens that is if you have kids. A little heavy on gas, but if you can afford it, gas would be the least of your worries.
accountCircle Ahmed E
Luxury vehicle with advanced technology.
I personally love this car and thinks it is a good choice for people looking for a high-end luxury car. There is voice recognition, sensors on the back to open the trunk, and great sensors which appear on the front screen alarming you if something may come in contact with your car, which I have had no problem with. The seats are made of high quality leather, nice led lights to match the mood, reflective and attractive material on the exterior.
accountCircle Ronald S
Expensive to maintain vehicle.
Like: room, engine, solid vehicle.. Do not like: a/c vents are too small and do not adjust well, trim tends to wear easily, do not like the run flat tires as they have to be replaced every 20,000 miles and are expensive, servicing a BMW is too expensive..

Amazing car! Drives like an absolute dream.
This car performs far better than any other car I have driven, it is comfortable and luxurious on the inside and exterior and I love the features like the speedometer and reverse cameras. It also has one of my favorite operating systems with the controls in the middle where a stick shift would be.

Powerful but usable on an everyday basis.
Its a strong, fast, and powerful car. Yet it is expensive, and the brakes sound like a bus. It's a good family car and the sound system is ok.

What Do Critics Say About the BMW X5?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 BMW X5 is a very comfortable and refined luxury SUV, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the X5 at 4.4/5, praising the luxurious cabin, but doesn’t like the very limited legroom in the third row.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2017 X5 a 4.4/5, enjoying the sporty driving experience, but owners don’t like the firm suspension compared to other SUVs.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 BMW X5 Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 BMW X5 include fuel pump failures, leaking sunroofs, along with some stereo system issues. Overall, these problems are similar to some other luxury SUVs in the same price range, but repair costs are high due to the expensive parts and labor.

Fuel pump failures are the most widespread complaint on the 2017 X5, showing up at roughly 45,000 miles. There are high pressure fuel pump issues which are widespread across many BMW models from this era. BMW has also issued a recall on the fuel pump and will replace it free of charge in affected models.

Leaking sunroofs are another problem mentioned by several BMW X5 owners in the first 5,000 miles. The problem is usually caused by an improperly installed gasket, or a clogged sunroof drain line. Fixing the problem is usually covered under warranty when it’s caught while the SUV is so new, but out of warranty can cost around $400 to fix.

Some stereo system issues have also been reported on the 2017 X5 at around 1,000 miles. Usually the problem involves the stereo and navigation system freezing up. There are software updates available which improve the reliability of the system. Most dealerships will install these updates for free as part of a normal service, while some charge around $50.

There are five recalls on the 2017 BMW X5, which is similar to many other luxury SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers a coolant leak in the EGR module which could lead to a fire. BMW will replace the full EGR cooler on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2017 BMW X5 Last?

A well-maintained 2017 BMW X5 can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than other midsize luxury SUVs like the Lexus RX. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $1,134 per year.

As a used 2017 BMW X5 reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the drive belt idler pulley for $300, wheel bearings costing $600, along with the timing chain tensioner which costs $700.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 10.2-inch display screen with BMW’s iDrive technology. Optional upgrades include a powerful Bang & Olufsen stereo system.

Standard safety technology is okay, offering parking sensors and a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • 360-degree camera
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Traffic sign recognition
  • Night vision camera
  • Automatic parallel parking

Is the 2017 BMW X5 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 BMW X5 is a good value since it offers plenty of technology and performance for the money. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $36,980 to $61,540, making it more than a Volvo XC90 or Acura MDX. When new, the price range was $56,600 to $100,700. Depreciation is worse than other midsize SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the BMW X5?

  • The base engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six (sDrive35i and xDrive35i models) which generates 300 horsepower at up to 23 MPG. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Both models can accelerate from 0-60 mph in around six seconds.
  • Next up is the xDrive50i’s 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine, which produces a robust 445 horsepower at up to 17 MPG. Like the inline-six, this engine is also paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 0-60 mph acceleration time for the xDrive50i is quick at around 4.7 seconds.
  • The X5 also offers a diesel engine option, found in the xDrive35d model. This 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel engine generates 255 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission at up to 25 MPG.
  • Finally, there is the X5 xDrive40e, a plug-in hybrid model. It combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce a combined 308 horsepower. What Colors Does the BMW X5 Come In?

How Comfortable Is the BMW X5?

The 2017 BMW X5 has a luxurious and comfortable interior. It can accommodate up to five passengers in its standard configuration, but an optional third row can increase this capacity to seven, although the third row is best suited for children. The seats are comfortable with standard 14-way power-adjustable front seats, providing ample support for long journeys. The optional multi-contour seats offer even more adjustability and come with a massaging function.

The cabin is very quiet, isolating passengers from road and wind noise effectively. The ride quality is smooth, courtesy of the X5’s advanced suspension system, which absorbs road imperfections well. This is true even when the vehicle is equipped with larger wheels or the optional sport suspension. The X5 also offers generous legroom and headroom, even for taller passengers in the rear seats. Overall, the 2017 BMW X5 delivers a very comfortable driving and riding experience.

How Much Storage Space Does the BMW X5 Have?

The 2017 BMW X5, a luxury midsize SUV, provides a notable amount of storage space. It offers 35.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. This space could comfortably accommodate items such as a couple of large suitcases, a stroller, or a full load of grocery bags.

If you need more room, the rear seats can be folded down, expanding the cargo space to 76.7 cubic feet. In this configuration, the X5 can accommodate larger items like a bike, small furniture pieces, or even a kayak. This makes the BMW X5 not only luxurious and comfortable but also quite practical for various cargo needs.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the BMW X5 was introduced for the 2014 model year.

2015: Slightly more efficient due to updates to the transmission software.

2016: New xDrive40e Plug-In hybrid model available which is much more efficient.

2017: Added Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging pad.

2018: The M Sport package now has all the same features as the Premium package.

2019: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation, more spacious cabin, improved engines, and better technology.

2020: The V8-Powered M50i model was added to the lineup for a sportier driving experience.

2021: New xDrive45e plug-in hybrid introduced, xDrive50i discontinued, standard Android Auto.

How Does the BMW X5 Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 BMW X5 is a very nice luxury SUV, although shoppers should be prepared for high ownership costs as they age due to the expensive parts and labor for them.

The BMW X3 is a smaller SUV offered by BMW, which is available for around $5,000 less. Steering is more responsive in the BMW X3, while the BMW X5 offers more passenger and cargo space. We recommend the BMW X5 for most shoppers since it’s a more practical choice.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is another SUV which is available for around $5,000 less as well. Off-road performance is better in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, while the interior is more luxurious in the BMW X5. We recommend the BMW X5 since it’s more fun to drive, and has fewer mechanical issues reported.

Road trip comfort with heads up display.
The vehicle is fun to drive and great on road trips. It easily fits all of our luggage and gear for a week long trip. We also have the heads up display with shows your speed and navigation directions on your windshield. This feature ensures you keep your eyes on the road as much as possible. I really like this capability. The only issue is that BMW has been slow or failed to respond to issues with the ConnectedDrive. The car lost its connection to the servers and it took several phones calls and trips to the dealer to get it resolved.

It has luxurious and comfortable cabin that lives up to its price tag. Does not have a third row but we didn't need one. Cargo area is what you see. Interior is what I would call Spartan luxury. 2017 BMW x5 review: luxury midsize SUVs with better performance.
The x5 is a large vehicle. The beauty of it is in the way the big lines are delicately concealed in a roomy seven-seater SUV design that combines elegance and aggression. It has superlative engine. A delight in ride comfort. The 2017 BMW x5 diesel makes an impressive 413 pound-feet of torque and cruises at 29 mpg on the highway. The problem is it does not play with android phones. It plays efficiently with apple CarPlay connectivity. Those who are looking for a luxurious SUV for long commutes and road trip, it can be best option for them.

BMW x5 x35i is a good choice.
No problems to report. It did have a system glitch with the moonroof that was easily resolved with a quick google search. Performance is good, adequate for my lifestyle. It does have some peppiness to it. If I didn't highway commute so much, I would have rather purchased the x50i for the power upgrade. I have the m sport package which adds a lot of nice touches such as upgraded wheels, exhaust, fenders, steering wheel and seats. The exhaust sounds great from the outside, although very quiet on the inside. Reliability has been great. Comfort is to be expected from BMW.

Love this vehicle and the brand itself. Have owned BMW since 1990. Love the safety. The controls are effortless. Response is great. Feels good to drive. Reasonable gas mileage. Very well built. A solid vehicle. I have considered others when I am car shopping, but they do not compare. I would love to buy American. Still a long way before American cars reach the level of BMW. If you keep your car for longer than a few years, your car starts to fail. Sad.

The pros & cons of the BMW x5.
I love driving the vehicle. It rides really smoothly and beautifully. Love how it drives on highway and open roads. It is beautiful looking. It is a bit pricey and many features (bells and whistles) that you have to pay extra for in a BMW are standard features available in many less premium brands at no additional costs. Some of the features are a bit confusing to use, for example, it is not clear to me which light setting is in use on the car which is dangerous (particularly at night) since the car's features allow you to shut off the rear lights - which include the break lights. I did not understand why bms made that feature. Additionally, I find the windshield wipers very annoying and hard to turn off. Also we do not really see a big difference btw. The x3 and x5 which is annoying since we paid so much extra for the x5 rather than the x3. Otherwise, I love the car and would buy again.

The best car to drive and comfortable.
None. Had zero issues. Performance wise, it meets the mark. It is highly reliable with comfortable features. The best part is how fast I can go in the car. The car functions prestigious. The other feature I like is the sound system. It sounds amazing especially riding fast.

My car is a land vehicle used to carry.
It has four doors and a big boot. Furthermore, it has good leg room in the back and the seats are very comfortable. I love my car because it takes me from a to b. It is a very reliable car and has a stereo, CD player and an mp3. In addition, I use my car to visit my friends, go to work.

My BMW is stylish and safe and has room for the kids while having everything an adult would want.
I love that it has every feature possible. Best features are back up camera, heated seated and great entertainment console. It has a big tank so I only fill up once a week and the inside is roomy and spacious

The Beast
Fast, comfortable, smooth transmission, lots of torque and great mileage for such a big heavy beast. No complaints what so ever. A shame the diesel was discontinued.

Endless functionality if you have the time to learn.
There are a lot of different functions the car has and it takes awhile to learn all of them. It is time consuming to activate or deactivate all the available functions. Also, the driver position that is set to number 1 and programmed to the key will reset itself anytime someone else gets in the car with the secondary key.

The BMW x5 is a champ & it is continues to be one of the top midsize luxury.
Steering wheel vibrates when applying brakes, oil leaks, stiff windows. But this vehicle provide good performance it is engine quality is so strong & comfortable to drive. The brand provide so much of facilities in this vehicle. It is look very gorgeous both inside & outside. It should on everyone’s first choice.

I average about 1000 miles per tank of gas thanks to my hybrid model!
My SUV is a hybrid model, so I get great gas mileage! The transition from gas to electric while driving is smooth, so the car drives really well.

The extraordinary diving machine.
It is a number one driving machine, everybody should try this model of BMW. It is a well price vehicle. Mileage is good, performance is marvelous, the most comfort car that I have ever seen in my life, no problems at all, most reliable, in short this is the vehicle that everybody deserve.

BMW x5 review: 5 star: performance, quality, speed, feathers.
I used my vehicle last 3 years, I am so happy and satisfied about the features, performance etc. I did not faced any problem regarding this. I suggest this BMW to buy. The performance of this vehicle is very high and the quality is also good. I will also search BMW others vehicle.

Heated steering wheel- heavy ride, quite & smooth.
None! Love this car- no problems yet. Had owned older models in the past and eventually repairs can be costly.
