Alex Showalter
Jun 2, 2023

The 2017 Acura MDX lasts around 250,000 miles with some relatively minor transmission software and automatic braking issues. At $31,500 to $37,000, it’s a great value for an entry-level luxury midsize SUV.

likeFilled The Good
The handling is very balanced, it offers a lot of standard driver-assistance features and the cabin is very quiet.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The stereo system is complicated to use, it’s not as luxurious as some other competitors and auto stop-start is clunky.

Is the 2017 Acura MDX a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2017 is a good year for the Acura MDX since it offers a lot of advanced safety features with a nice interior. Owner reviews praise the low ownership costs, strong V6 engine, along with the passenger space.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are reasonably nice, the seats are comfortable on longer drives, cargo space is also better than some competitors.

  • Safety 8/10 – The 2017 MDX is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with lane keep assist, along with adaptive cruise control. Optional upgrades include a 360-degree camera system.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 22 MPG, giving 429 miles of range from the 19.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $47 higher than average at $295 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2017 Acura MDX is cheaper than many other midsize luxury SUVs with reasonable depreciation rates, making it a good value.

The most important thing that you should know about my car is that it is red.
It is a good car. I like it a lot. It is very comfortable. I don't usually ever have mechanical problems with it. It is very fast, which is nice. And I like to show off what a pretty car I have.

It is a very comfortable ride.
I really like the comfort and space for long car rides. I dislike the gas mileage due to the high gas prices at the moment.

Good value for money. Checks a lot of boxes for car owners.
Reliable, sturdy, safe, spacious enough for our family

Acura mdx has all the bells and whistles.
I love my Acura mdx. Some of my favorite features are the 3rd row seats and the roominess of the car. I love that the back seats have air vents as well. I also like that you can set your seat position and the seat will automatically go to the seat position based on the drivers key fob. This car drives nicely and looks sleek.
accountCircle Tiya J
Great, roomy and affordable vehicle.
I love the comfortable and luxury drive to the vehicle. My sunroof provides great sunlight on a sunny day and the heated seats keep me warm in the colder months. This vehicle is low maintenance and very dependable. It is very roomy for our kids and I would recommend this vehicle to my friends and family. I love the safety features, like the blind side alert when a car is passing in your blind spot. There is an alert that goes off so you will not crash.

The ease of driving and the ease of using the accessories.
I just love it—no complaints. This is the 6th Acura I have had.

My car is mine and no one else.
My car drives like a dream. The only thing I dislike is that the phone says to hang up when you call a number and it flashes break when you do not need to.

The most important thing others should know about my car is that it is reliable.
I don't really have any problems with this vehicle. It is reliable and runs well. I like the smooth handling.
accountCircle Heather S
Not reliable, transmission slips despite regular maintenance.
The new 2017 mdx was in the shop 3 times in the first month until they finally found that it had been wired incorrectly. My trust in the quality and assembly of the vehicle dropped dramatically. Also, the transmission slips a lot while driving. It takes a while to warm up before driving. It certainly does not have same ride/comfort as my older 2010 mdx. Only thing it does have is power after it has been warmed up. That being said, I would not purchase another 2017 mdx.
accountCircle Michael K
Ok car bad gas pedal good storage
Don't like gas pedal. Don't like how car accelerates. If you gently hit gas pedal it barely goes but if you hit it hard it accelerates very fast. There is no middle ground. The car does drive ok when in cruise control on highway. Nice for storage. We will get a new car soon
accountCircle Morgan W
Why not to get a 2017 Acura mdx for your family of 5.
I used to love my vehicle but now I feel as if it is not very comfortable anymore and is not the right car for me and my family. It is to big and feels very wide when you drive which I dislike. The back row is very small which doesn't make for a comfortable drive. The GPS on the screen barely works and I paid extra for it.
accountCircle Jennifer M
Do not bother getting this vehicle you would be better off with a Honda.
Too many buttons to push when trying to do something on the car. GPS does not work or update. Supposed to be a 'luxury' car with a 'luxury' price, but it is nowhere close to being a luxury. May as well get a Honda and save money. It has zero power when you push the gas pedal down to the point of putting yourself in danger. I will never buy an Acura again.
accountCircle Ruby A
Best decision I ever made.
This vehicle drives amazingly its very comfortable and spacious inside. Great on gas honestly this car is something I didn't know I needed until I had it. If your thinking about getting this car think no longer and just buy it. Take this as your sign.
accountCircle Kenneth T
Good quality car with a lot of room.
The ride is not always smooth. I like the safety features. I wish the speed flashed on the front window. The car does warm up quickly in the winter. I like the heated seats and steering wheel. The is a good amount of space in the back of the SUV to be able to easily carry items.
accountCircle Morgan D
This car has great mileage.
The car is a smooth drive but it is wide so you feel like your going to hit things. The car is spacious. So, it is good for kids or families. It also has a large trunk. The car is very good on gas. The car is easy in the breaks as well. The car has heated seats and cooling seats, that is always nice. Lastly, I love this car.

What Do Critics Say About the Acura MDX?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Acura MDX is an upscale and reliable midsize SUV, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the MDX at 3.9/5, enjoying the power from the standard V6 engine, but doesn’t like the clunky auto stop-start feature.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the MDX a 4/5, praising the advanced safety features, but owners don’t like the basic interior materials.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Acura MDX Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Acura MDX include hesitation while changing gears, automatic braking issues, along with some paint quality issues. Overall, these problems are less severe than many other luxury SUVs on the market, leading to lower repair costs as the MDX ages.

Hesitation, while changing gears, is the most widespread complaint on the 2017 MDX at around 25,000 miles. There are software updates available which generally improve the transmission’s performance. Most dealers will install these updates as part of normal servicing, although some charge around $100.

Automatic braking system issues have also been reported on some 2017 Acura MDX models in the first 10,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a damaged or loose connection on one of the automatic braking sensors. Diagnosing and fixing the problem can cost $20 to $150, depending on its source.

Paint quality issues show up on some MDX models as well at around 40,000 miles. Paint which is left in direct sunlight and not properly cared for will start to wear down, especially on large flat surfaces like the hood and roof. The only way to fix clear coat and paint issues is by repainting the affected areas, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

There are three recalls on the 2017 Acura MDX, which is better than many other midsize luxury SUVs. The most serious recall is for a loss of power from the fuel pump. Acura will update the fuel pump software and replace the actual fuel pump for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the brake caliper coatings along with a tailgate lid light.

How Long Will the 2017 Acura MDX Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Acura MDX can last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly less than the long-lasting Lexus RX. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than most other high-end SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $597 per year.

As a used 2017 Acura MDX reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the tie rods for $135 each, a window regulator costing $450, along with the purge valve which costs around $250.

accountCircle Dawn W

I find the voice activated system to be very challenging to use. It's very difficult for it to understand what you are saying and it does not hear you when you speak in a normal tone.

accountCircle Roni R

It is reliable but one thing I do not like are that the windows shake and rattle. I have never had that happen in a car.

accountCircle Katherine A

The issues would be lots of oil changes, gas wastes very quickly and too much service to be done in the years I have had it.

accountCircle Tracey S

No problems at all driving is very smooth only problem I wish inside had more room but overall I am very satisfied with it.

accountCircle Bri G

It is reliable but it is pretty expensive upfront in general, lots of payments and due at signing costs and gas is a lot, costs a lot to maintain but the parts are high quality.

accountCircle Kerri L

The MDX is reliable. It has AWD and a V6 engine so it has plenty of power and is able to tow small trailers and sports equipment. I haven't encountered any problems with the MDX yet.

accountCircle Lee A

It’s very reliable. I haven't had anything go wrong with it and have only had to get the oil changed. The tires are good quality as well.

accountCircle Dave J

So far haven't seen any problem with it. Has always been reliable and comfortable. I have taken it for road trips and has been a great ride!

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good with a standard 8-inch touchscreen stereo system with Bluetooth. Optional upgrades include a larger 9-inch screen, along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is better than many competitors offering:

  • AcuraWatch
  • Active lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control

Optional driver assistance feature upgrades include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • 360-degree camera

Is the 2017 Acura MDX a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 Acura MDX is a good value since it’s cheaper than many other luxury SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $31,500 to $37,000, making it less than a Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5. When new, the price range was $44,050 to $58,500. Depreciation is similar to other luxury SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

Regarding towing capacity, when properly equipped, the 2017 Acura MDX can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is enough for small trailers, boats, or a couple of jet skis As for acceleration, the 2017 MDX is quite competitive. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in around 6.3 seconds, which is a respectable time in the midsize SUV category.

What Colors Does the Acura MDX Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Acura MDX?

The 2017 Acura MDX offers a high degree of comfort that is often praised by owners and reviewers alike. As a luxury midsize SUV, it provides spacious seating for up to seven passengers across its three rows. Even adults can sit comfortably in the third row, which is not the case with many competitors in this segment. The seats are upholstered in high-quality leather, and the front seats come standard with heating and power adjustments, providing a pleasant ride regardless of the weather.

On the road, the MDX offers a smooth, comfortable ride, thanks to its well-tuned suspension system that effortlessly absorbs bumps and potholes. Road and wind noise are effectively muted, creating a quiet, serene cabin environment. Moreover, its tri-zone automatic climate control further enhances passenger comfort by allowing different temperature settings for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers.

How Much Storage Space Does the Acura MDX Have?

The 2017 Acura MDX is a versatile SUV that provides ample storage space for your travel needs. It has 15.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats. If you fold down these seats, the cargo space expands to 43.4 cubic feet. For maximum cargo capacity, when you fold down both the second- and third-row seats, the space increases significantly to a generous 90.9 cubic feet. It also has plenty of room in the center console.

To put these numbers into perspective, the 15.8 cubic feet behind the third row can comfortably fit small suitcases or a week’s worth of groceries for a family. Once you fold down the third row, the 43.4 cubic feet of space can accommodate larger items like a bicycle or a large TV box. If you require more room for a move or a large shopping trip, folding down both the second and third rows to reach the maximum 90.9 cubic feet could fit items equivalent to a full-sized couch or several large moving boxes. Overall, the 2017 Acura MDX is a practical choice for those needing flexible cargo space.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Acura MDX was introduced for the 2014 model year.

2015: No changes from earlier years.

2016: Nine-speed transmission standard on the lineup, revised all-wheel drive system and Siri Eyes Free.

2017: Exterior styling changes on the front bumper, capless fueling, automatic high beams, and AcuraWatch safety features.

2018: New dual-screen infotainment system with Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2019: Transmission software updated to be smoother, and variable suspension dampers introduced.

2020: No major changes from earlier years.

2022: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new engines, technology, and sportier model.

How Does the Acura MDX Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Acura MDX is a very nice luxury SUV since it offers plenty of the latest technology with relatively low ownership costs as it ages, even if it’s not a class-leader in any of the areas it’s still a good choice.

The Honda Pilot is another midsize SUV which is available for about $3,500 less. Both the Honda Pilot and Acura MDX are built on the same base platform, although technology and interior materials are nicer in the Acura MDX. We recommend the Acura MDX since the features are worth the money, but they are both very similar midsize SUVs.

The Lexus RX is a popular competitor which costs around $4,000 more. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Lexus RX, while the Acura MDX offers more passenger room. We recommend the Lexus RX since it’s the longest-lasting midsize luxury SUV on the market, but the Acura MDX is another great choice.

Something that I really like about this car is the sport mode.
This is an overall great car, has had little to no maintenance problems and drives very smoothly. I really like how the car is at an affordable price but looks really expensive. I think that the dark exterior makes the car look very nice to both me and other viewers. This is my favorite car that I have ever owned since I could drive.

My car have lot of features like rear camera, side-by-side sensor, and etc.
The things I liked about my cars are, comfortable sitting, good engine, and lots of room. The things I do not like about my car are very expensive to maintenance(depends on income), takes lot of gas (in a state like ca, gas are very expensive). Other than those, there are not anything that I dislike about my cars.

It is very comfortable with great gas mileage, it is just not that great in the snow, I feel like I need to buy winter tires for me. Also, the infotainment system is a bit confusing and takes some getting used to. Overall I really love it though! Great SUV for a family!

So far I have had no issues with my car. The ride is still so smooth. I have driven all over the state with this vehicle and it is super comfortable and great on gas. 2017 Acura mdx review (with advanced tech package).
The Acura mdx has great gas mileage. It is sporty yet luxurious. It also has a great turning radius. We take it on long trips, and it is able to accommodate all of our luggages/camping supplies. One downside is that within the first 2 years, I noticed an issue with the transmission.

Acura mdx: pros and cons of it.
The reliability of the car is great. It is absolutely ideal for long commutes to work and long distance traveling. The brakes are incredibly reliable, as is the power of the engine. The back-up camera is very helpful, as is the double screens. However, the navigation is very slow when typing in addresses.

Be sure you really want a full size SUV, it is larger then you may expect.
The 2017 Acura MDX is spacious luxury at an affordable price! It has plenty of space seating up to 7 (5 comfortably, 3rd row more suited for children or shorter people). It drives smoothly, quietly, and comfortably, however its a heavy car so don't expect fantastic mpg. One of the best feature is the ability to change driving mode from standard, to comfort or sports mode. Sports mode is very noticeable and makes the drive feel much more responsive but at the cost of more fuel. Safety features are excellent and matches the competition within it is class. Areas for improvement though would be to update the cabins facade and infomat system. Infomat system is terribly slow and confusing.

My car drives very smoothly. Feels like driving a car because its lower to the ground than most SUVs..The radio system is top of the line and the comfort of the leather seats feel great too. Lots of room for cargo being able to fit long semi small width items easily. Great mileage to the gallon as I have been getting plus 21 miles per gallon. Haven t had any issues whatsoever with this vehicle and look forwards to buying the newest model as soon as possible.

My car is an amazing blue car. I take really good care of her. The seats are firm and support, and the seats move back and forth so you can get just the right angle to your liking. I haven't had problems with this car at all; in fact, I had a minor brush with another car and mines came out unbothered. This is an amazing car and I can tell it will be in my family for a long time. Only because I know that it will last a very long time.

Recommend Acura mdx for all types of drivers.
Burning oil too fast. Keep extra oil in trunk. Overall inexpensive fixes small due to wear and tear. Wheel speed sensor, axle, control arm pass side, rotate tires at least every year all wheel drive comes in handy especially when you keep up with tires and undercarriage components. Oil changes before every 5,000 miles with synthetic only. Make sure to change wipers every 6-8 months adjustable speeds super comfortable because have had cars where even a slow setting was too fast.

My car is very good on gas but I do not like the look of the inside. It seems that people in it are quite cramped up and it is not the best for long drives across the country. The tire pressure is good and I haven't had many oil changes for problems since purchasing my vehicle.

Great spacious 3rd row seating.
Very roomy and comfortable 3rd row seating. Easy to get in and out. Large storage area, especially when 3rd row is put down. Love the automatic cruise control, and how car stays in lane automatically.

Acura mdx problems & sacrifices.
My Acura mdx is a very good car that fits my family perfectly, but there was one problem with the engine sitting wrong on the brace so that needed to be fixed as well as the radio that had broken for some reason. Now though it is fine and has great gas mileage getting me to home and work with a decent price on gas.

It's a budget car with decent feature.
This is my first purchased car. I purchased it after seeing its every feature. It's a really good car with decent speed. In that car used engine is excellent. It's never disappoint me. I really like this car for its best feature. Its horsepower also in high range overall its a best car.

The car is very reliable and great on gas. Seats are controlled by a push of a button. Very easy to work with for a technology car.
I own a black Acura MDX. I have the technology package which allows me to have access to oncall and many special features. Power driver seat. Rear Seats. Folding with storage center armrest. 4 one-touch power windows. Instrumentation. Clock. Convenience. Adaptive cruise control. Comfort. Sun sensor and sunroof. Cameras in front and in back of car. Heated seats for comfort. Very comfortable and safe vehicle.

Every "bell & whistle" you would ever want!!
Very comfortable to drive and to ride as a passenger. USB and AUX ports in the front and both rear seats. Back seat has independent ac & heat controls. The seats have heat & cooling options. It has a heated steering wheel. The console in front seat is huge. There is a huge center console between the middle seats as well. The middle and rear seats fold completely flat for hauling large cargo. The rear seats have headrests that lower to provide clear view from the front. Nice car!!

The Acura mdx is an efficient and reliable vehicle.
I do not have any real problems with my vehicle. It drives very smoothly, the engine is quiet. It is very spacious and has an attractive interior and exterior. The air conditioning is very effective, I should know, I live in Florida. The seats also fold down quite easily to allow for more storage. It has pretty good fuel economy as well.

Awesome family car. Great on space, comfort and gas.
I love the pearl white color with tan leather interior and black carpet. Smooth ride and comfortable. Third row seating for extra seating if needed. Plenty of space for storage in center console. Great in mileage. Absolutely love the car starter and range to start car from very far.

Good quality car with a lot of room.
The ride is not always smooth. I like the safety features. I wish the speed flashed on the front window. The car does warm up quickly in the winter. I like the heated seats and steering wheel. The is a good amount of space in the back of the SUV to be able to easily carry items.

Mdx rocks: this is an amazing car for the family and for me.
Runs extremely well and is very comfortable. I can smoothly cruise down the street or turn the sports mode on and get a kick that way. Extremely sleek looking car and very attractiveness.

Clock
Vehicle is great in every aspect except 3 issues 1. Clock is missing. The only way to view clock is to acknowledge by pressing OK button (when the screen display that The Driver is responsible for the safe operation of this vehicle. If I start vehicle 40 times a day then I have to press OK 40 times to see the time. It is very annoying. I have already written to fix this issue but no response yet. Front seats are very low. I have to keep a cushion on the seat. 3. Battery storage is very short. If you are listening music on a parked vehicle for more than 1/2 hr. Your MDX may not have enough battery to start it.

Smooth riding and family friendly.
The car rides very smoothly and has convenience tech features that help make driving less of a hassle. It is very comfortable with quality leather, and has a decent sound system. Bluetooth works very easily and ensures distraction-free driving. It is a good family vehicle.

Lovely luxury SUV. Stylish and comfortable.
Very comfortable car. It handles well and is easy to drive. I love the heated/cooling features with the seats, front and back. And the heated steering wheel is really nice. Lots of cup holders and USB ports all throughout the vehicle. The 2nd and 3rd row seats fold down to carry lots of cargo. And there is covered trunk space in the back. Window shades on the back windows are a nice touch. The 2nd row seats have separate heating and ac controls. Very nice car.

Pretty pearl white Acura!
Reliable but I should have got all wheel drive for the snow. The white color is pretty, newer styles are a lot nicer on the outside. Pretty good gas mileage. It is comfortable inside and the heated seats are a nice feature. Performance wise, sport mode is great and fast.

Very comfortable car to own.
Drives very smoothly. Quiet car. Comfortable for me and my family. My car is very good on gas mileage. The car is an SUV, not too big and not too small. I have taken it for road trips and it all went amazing. My baby cousin has his car seat in the back and never cries or gets uncomfortable while driving. Also, the potholes and speed bumps are nothing for this car.

Acura MDX has it all: Interior comfort and superior dependability!
The Acura MDX is by far the best vehicle I have ever experienced. The seat adjustments on both the driver and passenger seats allow the ultimate in comfort. The cargo area is more spacious than most SUVs and the third seat underneath is a great option for small children. The car has never presented a mechanical problem, and it has the power and agility to fly up any mountain road. I feel safe and secure out on the highway in this solid and sound - and beautiful vehicle.

My car features a 3.0 liter v6 engine as its main power source.
I honestly think that this car is wonderful, I have had no problems out of this car. The retail of these cars or even used cars would be about just under $45,000. It is a great for shoppers that loves spacious cars. The usual cost of maintenance is $571.

Solid family car, with decent all wheel drive.
The all when drive is awesome, and has saved my families but many times. The infotainment is not the best, but the speakers are nice. The latch on the armrest broke on me, and I had to replace that, but that has been the only major problem that I have had to face with this car.
