Jul 21, 2023

The 2018 Ford Expedition lasts around 225,000 miles with some shock and mirror motor issues reported. At $29,990 to $52,850, it’s a decent value for a large SUV with some advanced technology and a comfortable cabin.

likeFilled The Good
There’s more passenger room than other large SUVs, the V6 engine is strong and the Sync 3 stereo system has great features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The brakes feel soft, it’s difficult to maneuver on small streets in cities, and the suspension is firm.

I love the space we have! It is perfect for families with lots of little ones!
I love this car! It has been super reliable. We have almost 100k miles and it still runs with no problems! There’s tons of space for all of our kids plus 2 car seats. We also always take tons of luggage whenever we go out of town and we always have the space for that to.

Large SUV. Very roomy. Very reliable and easy to drive.
My vehicle does not have any problems. It is very roomy and comfortable. It is reliable. It has all features that for safety and navigation and entertainment. It comes with many different colors and interior design packages for you to choose from. It is a large SUV.

My favorite car I have ever owned.
I drove an ford explorer and I thought loved it. But when I bought my ford expedition I loved it! I love the room it has! The bucket seats are a must for easy access to the back seat! I have had zero issues out of it. The turbos really let it get up and go quick. The gas mileage is pretty good for a full size suv.

2018 ford expedition amazing family car!
This vehicle is wonderful. The driver and passenger seat are so comfortable. I can fit 3 car/ booster seats in the middle row and still have a back row or I can flip down the back row and have lots of trunk space. In winter I get 16-16.5 mpg in summer I get 18-19.5 mpg. It has lots of get up and go. It has been a very reliable car thus far and am so happy with the purchase.

Very spacious and comfortable.
I have never loved a car like I do the expedition. There is plenty of space! Not to mention the leather seats (if you get that package) is great! I chose to not get a bench seat in the middle and got the caption and I love that more than the bench, with easy access to the third row seats.

Comfort level of the expedition is amazing. Plenty of room everywhere.
I love the comfort of the expedition. It rides really well and gets good gas mileage for a larger SUV. It has a lot of 'comfort' features such as the heated/cool seats and heated steering wheel. These are really nice to have in the cold winter. There is plenty of cargo space, even when the third row is up. The leg room in both the second row and third row are substantial.

Safe reliable vehicle, and very comfortable
Great size. Good gas mileage on the road for the size. Lots of legroom in all seats. Very comfortable. Love the a/c and heated seats. So far very reliable. The only problem I have had is the mirror's get stuck and won't adjust always. I love the adaptive cruise control and extra safety features.

The best vehicle I have ever owned!
I absolutely love my ford expedition. I have had a lot of cars over my life, from BMW to Chevy to jeep and other fords, but this is my absolute favorite. Easy to drive, comfortable, totally reliable, room to haul people or anything I want, beautiful design. I love it!

My 2018 expedition max has the worst ride of any vehicle I have ever owned It bounces so bad when I hit a bump I can hardly control it . What is the deal. A $ 68,0000 vehicle should not ride this bad. Dealer said must be my new tires. Whatever

Problems
Both driver and passenger windows come out of their track and will not roll up all the way which is bad during rain. Also the parking brake comes on by itself a lot and gets stuck and vehicle will not shift from Park to drive or neutral etc. Radio volume sometimes goes very high when applying brakes

Fast and Pretty, Chronic Problems
I love the power and looks of my Platinum Expedition, but just two months into owning it, the “Driver Control Malfunction” warning appeared and comes on intermittently, changing the feel of the suspension, which suddenly becomes very stiff and rough. Several trips to the Ford shop later, the entire drive control module AND now a suspension replacement leave me wondering if it’s been solved, and perhaps regretting my purchase.

Sway / Swerve Problems
Great family vehicle with lots of space and power. However, whether your towing or not, at highway speeds or with very little wind, the vehicle's backend sways and is affected by semi-trucks passing. Very noticeable and dangerous when towing my 22' trailer. The backend feels squirmy and feels like you're driving on a wet road. Although the towing capacity is better than 9,000 lbs, I will not tow with this vehicle. Just doesn't feel safe.
accountCircle Makayla L
The 2018 Ford Expedition is completely different than the Expeditions you might be used to.
I dislike how small the windows are now, compared to the previous year's Expedition. I would like it off of the ground a little more, but in that case, I might be better getting a truck. I do like the technology, which Ford does a good job with compared to other car manufacturers.

My love hate relationship with my ford expedition.
My car has experienced many problems such as the running boards work sporadically, the seat belt is broken, my sunroof is cracked, and after having my car in the shop for 3 weeks they never fixed my sunroof, and I do not recommend this car to new car buyers! Because everything just continues to break and it is not convenient at all with my large family.

Good fuel economy for such a large vehicle.
Love the amount of room and comfort level. Do not like being so high up and the center of gravity. The audio and climate systems are really good.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Expedition?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Ford Expedition offers more comfort and convenience than earlier years, with good owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Expedition at 3.8/5, enjoying the passenger room in all three rows, but doesn’t like the weak brake pedal feel.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Expedition a 4.2/5, praising the updated technology, but owners don’t like the high fuel costs.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Ford Expedition Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Ford Expedition include the struts and shocks leaking, worn-out mirror motors, along with burning oil in the engine. Overall, these problems are average compared to other large SUVs, leading to reasonable repair costs as the Expedition ages.

The struts and shocks leaking is the most widespread complaint on the 2018 Ford Expedition, showing up at around 20,000 miles. Usually shocks and struts are good for over 50,000 miles, so these original sets just tend to wear out quickly. Replacing the shocks and struts costs around $800, depending on local labor rates.

Worn-out mirror motors are another problem mentioned by 2018 Expedition owners at roughly 40,000 miles. The only way to fix mirror motors when they wear out is to replace them. Changing out the motors costs around $400.

Burning oil in the engine also shows up on some Expedition models at around 35,000 miles. The problem is known to start with leaks around the spark plugs and VCT rings. Often the problem can be fixed under warranty for free. In others you may need to rebuild the top of the engine, which costs over $1,500.

There are seven recalls on the 2018 Ford Expedition, which is more than many other large SUVs on the market. The most serious recall is for the gear shift cable clip, which may say the vehicle is in park when it is not. Ford will replace the cable clip on affected models for free. Many of the other recalls cover seat and airbag issues, which Ford will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Ford Expedition Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Expedition can last around 225,000 miles, which is shorter than some other large SUVs like the Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are average for a large SUV, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $609 per year.

As a used 2018 Expedition reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the tie rods for $190, a power steering pump costing $400, along with the A/C compressor which costs $900.

accountCircle Mirza Y

Standard safety technology is okay, offering a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, along with Ford Mykey which sets speed and volume limits.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Automatic high beams
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Front parking sensors
  • Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning

Is the 2018 Ford Expedition a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Ford Expedition is a decent value for a large SUV with plenty of passenger room and some nice cabin features. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $29,990 to $52,850, making it less than a Chevy Suburban or GMC Yukon. When new, the price range was $51,790 to $78,865. Depreciation is a bit worse than other SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What Engines Come In the Ford Expedition?

The 2018 Ford Expedition has a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, boosted to 400 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft in the Platinum trim. It features a ten-speed automatic transmission and fuel economy is around 20 MPG. The SUV goes from 0-60 mph in around 6.2 seconds, and it can tow up to 9,300 pounds when properly equipped.

What Colors Does the Ford Expedition Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford Expedition?

The 2018 Ford Expedition excels regarding comfort, delivering a spacious and upscale interior that’s designed to provide a pleasant ride for all passengers. This large SUV has a seating capacity for up to eight people, offering ample room in all three rows, which is a rarity in many vehicles of this size. Even the third row is spacious enough to accommodate adults comfortably, not just children.

The seats themselves are designed with comfort in mind, providing excellent support and cushioning, making long drives more enjoyable. In the higher trims, features such as leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, and power-adjustable front seats with lumbar support further enhance the comfort level.

The 2018 Expedition also offers a smooth, composed ride, even when the road gets rough. Thanks to its independent rear suspension and optional adaptive suspension system, it effectively absorbs road imperfections, reducing the amount of vibration and noise that reaches the cabin.

Adding to the comfort is the Expedition’s quiet interior. Ford has done a great job of insulating the cabin to keep road and wind noise to a minimum, making it easier for passengers to have conversations or simply enjoy the ride in peace.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Expedition Have?

The 2018 Ford Expedition offers abundant storage space to cater to various user needs. For maximum cargo capacity, this large SUV boasts an impressive 104.6 cubic feet of space when the second and third-row seats are folded flat. This vast storage space can accommodate a wide range of items. For instance, it could easily fit multiple large suitcases for an extended family vacation, or even larger items like a bicycle or a small kayak.

When only the third-row seats are folded down, you still have a substantial 63.6 cubic feet of space, enough room for the weekend camping gear of a family or the band instruments of a small musical group. If all seats are in use, which is often the case for large families or group travels, the cargo space behind the third row provides 20.9 cubic feet of room. This space might seem smaller in comparison, but it is enough to store several grocery bags, a stroller, or even a cooler for a picnic or a day at the beach.

In addition to the extensive cargo space, the 2018 Ford Expedition also includes a multitude of storage compartments and cup holders throughout the cabin for added convenience. These spots are perfect for stashing smaller items such as phones, wallets, snacks, and beverages. Overall, the 2018 Ford Expedition’s substantial storage capacity makes it an excellent choice for those who usually require a large amount of luggage or equipment space.

2016: New Sync 3 stereo system added which replaces MyFord Touch system.

2017: No changes from earlier years.

2018: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with a more powerful V6 engine, updated interior and exterior styling.

How Does the Ford Expedition Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Ford Expedition is a decent full size SUV, offering plenty of passenger room, a high towing capacity, and average ownership costs as it ages.

The Chevy Tahoe is another large SUV which is available for about $3,000 more. Long-term reliability ratings are slightly better on the Chevy Tahoe, while the Ford Expedition offers more passenger room, especially in the third row. We recommend the Chevy Tahoe since it will last a bit longer.

The Lincoln Navigator is available for about $5,500 more. Both the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition are built on the same platform, while the Lincoln Navigator has more luxury features and advanced technology. We recommend the Lincoln Navigator since you get a lot more technology, and a better ownership experience, making it worth the extra cost.

The 2nd row slides for access to the back while a car seat can be tethered in.
Pros: great trunk without, great turning radius, great space between rows, no wheelbase in the 3rd row makes it very comfortable, not as long as it is competitors making it feel more sporty, great mileage, great gas tank size, very smooth. Con: air conditioning has needed to be evaluated and finally completely replaced, but I had to take it in 4 times to find the problem.

2018 ford expedition-love it!
I have had no issues with my vehicle. It comfortably fits my family of four and all of our belongings-groceries, baseball gear, suitcases. Best auto investment ever.
I went from a 4-runner to my expedition, & I am so glad it happened! The car drives amazing I have the max & it turns on a dime! 3rd row setting is good because it has extra leg room where other SUVs do not. I found a lot of times you ride back there with your knees in your chest! Not in my expedition! The tank is huge so low gas mileage is not a problem by no means! On a normal just around town day I get over 500 miles to empty! Recently I took a trip to Ohio “I'm from Louisiana” I was showing 700 miles to empty! I truly have no complaints!

It is a good car, the seats are comfortable and I like that you can change the colors of the lights inside. The tire was challenging to change but I think that was operator error. Could get better mileage but comparatively with all the full size SUVs it is great. We get about 18mpg with winter tires or all terrain. Ford exhibition: a good car for the money.
The cab is very roomy with ample leg space. It rides well and started right away even in the record breaking cold we had this winter. The 4x4 feature enabled me to free myself after getting stuck in the snow twice this winter. The seats are uncomfortable but I wish they were power instead of manual. The manual controls make it a little difficult to position the seats. The back seats drop down easily making hauling large loads hassle free.

The vehicle has backup assist which I love and use every time I drive the car.
This car is a great vehicle, it's a bit expensive but it's a great car for long car trips. I have a big dog so it's a great car for taking him to the vet or the park. It's a very comfortable car to relax in and easy to drive. Since it's a big car, it takes a lot of gas to fill up the tank which costs a lot of money. So that is the only problem but everything else is great.

Expedition considerations for the large family
Best stable vehicle for large family. Travels well, lots of space and thief row seats recline for comfort. I love the fact they such a large vehicle rides so incredibly smoothly and handles well. Turning radius is amazing on sharp turns. The only complaint is I am not adjusting to the turning dial transmission instead of the traditional on the wheel shifter stick. Also for the money all expeditions should come with auto start, heated front seats and a touch screen radio system.

Its black and blue and red flames on it even down to the rims and I have great set of tires on it and it came with two extra tires as well just in case I break down and it has an air bag just for accident and emergency.

Love our ford expedition el.
Expedition xl is a large SUV three rows of seats and cargo room larger than more SUVs. Gas mileage is great for a large car. Easy to drive. If my wife can drive it is easy to drive. Lots of extras that make for enjoyable tripping. Front and back heated seat. Front ac seats.

It has over 475,000 miles on the odometer.
I drive a Black, 2006, Ford Expedition XLT. It has 450,998 miles on it, and it's still running with the original engine and the original transmission. It comes equipped with a 5.4 L V8 engine that can produce 300 hp; it has a towing capacity of 6000 pounds. This truck also comes equipped with a four speed automatic; it's a fleet footed cruiser that gets 14 in the city and 17 on the highway.

Inside screen of my vehicle.
I got my car pre used from a friend and I haven't ever had a problem with it up to the new year. I always make sure to get it checked up on whatever it may need to continue running smoothly as I Does. My vehicle is very reliable and gets me where I need to be and there is not a reason to get a new one currently.

She's fast and she's reliable
I haven't had any problems from my vehicle so far other than finding a good reliable place to have the oil changed. It is top performance and has proven reliable so far. I've had it for about three months and it's very comfortable and easy to drive. It has a rear camera and sunroof as well and the speakers are amazing.

Feels like a luxury vehicle.
Great vehicle with zero problems to date. I have 3 children and it is incredibly room with lots of dove for everyone. The trim is beautiful and the engine has incredible power and passing speed. For a large vehicle it feels like you are driving a luxury car.

Ford expedition: luxurious.
Only problems are with the electronics of the mirrors. They occasionally move on their own when the car starts to where you do not have them placed. Once they stop moving they can be put into the correct placements. Other than that, it is extremely comfortable and luxurious. It drives beautifully and is the smoothest ride of all the cars I have ever driven. Great for long rides with 8 people. Very roomy. Great gas mileage. Beautiful car. Impressive audio. Easy to navigate. Many spots for charging cables including a charging mat. Amazing sky view, the whole top is a window. Can open halfway as well. Recommend.

Comfortable, very safe and spacious car.
This car has a very smooth ride and great gas mileage. I drive it on country roads and it is still smooth ride. The seats have wonderful lumbar support and I feel very safe on the highway. It is spacious, a/c and heat work well. It has a fabulous sounding stereo, and a/c works well in the back seat for my kids and dogs.

Large vehicle, but drives like a car.
I have had no mechanical problems with my vehicle. I love it. I have always owned small cars for the ease of parking, making u-turns, etc. My husband convinced me to buy the expedition for the passenger and cargo space. It is a larger vehicle but drives like a car and I have had no problems parking it.

The Ford expedition is super comfortable and roomy and reliable!
I love my vehicle. The only issue I have had is with the side view mirrors. They automatically go in and out when you start/stop transmission and sometimes they will stick and I have to press the button for them to stop. I love how roomy it is and the seats have air and heat which is super nice.

Expedition trips require drawing straws for who has to sit in the third row.
I have had no problems so far. I have been very lucky. I have driven it all over the u.S. And it drives like a dream. The gas mileage is pretty good too. It is comfortable enough in the back seat for two adults although nobody really likes to sit in the third row.

Great SUV with all the trimming of a more expensive car.
No problems with this expedition. Very reliable with all the comforts of a more expensive car. Lots of room for passengers and cargo. Three rows of seats and still same cargo as regular full size SUV. Great gas mileage around town and on the highway.

2018 ford expedition platinum the best SUV.
A great car, very comfortable model with a powerful and quiet engine, his performances in long journeys is amazing, carrying until 6 passenger and his baggage. In sand tracks drives perfectly. But. A little higher gasoline consumption than others model.
