The engine is extremely efficient, the suspension is smooth even on rough roads, and there’s plenty of cargo space for a compact car.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There are some hard plastic materials in the cabin, it’s not fast at passing on the highway and the central instrument panel is distracting to some drivers.

Overall great car and worth the money.
One thing I do not like is the road noise. My older Prius plug-in was much quieter on the road at highway speeds. The other thing I am having problem with is the audio system. Every now and then it shuts down completely or gets frozen for no apparent reason. Other than those two issues, I love this car. The fuel economy is much better than the previous generation plug-in. It has much more options than the previous generation. My older Prius plug-in was trouble-free, and I am hoping that this one is just as reliable.

From a very happy Prius owner.
The 2020 Toyota Prius gets fabulous mileage (about 60 mpg), has a very comfortable ride, has a quiet, and has the road feel of a much larger car. I have had other Prius, but this is head and shoulders a more substantial car than the previous ones. And, on top of all that, it was a bargain!

The is the best car I have ever purchased and recommend it to everyone.
The Prius gas mileage cannot compare and the technology included will make you feel like you are driving a vehicle from the future. The large display screen makes it easy to see where you are going. It is comfortable, safe and reliable. The speed limit, your speed and directions can be viewed on the windshield directly in front of you. It is roomier on the inside than it looks and the trunk space is fantastic.

The phone charging station is not great and overheats really easily. The gas mileage is awesome! It is a comfortable car and drives very well, I feel safe with all of the safety features. I love the back up camera and parking sensors. The automatic brake feature is very handy. I love the pearly white color and the trunk size is pretty decent.

Comfortable, fabulous gas mileage, good looking. This is the nicest car I have owned. It has great warranties, great reviews and a history of reliability. I expect it will hold value for years. The interior is very nice, I love the seat heaters. My only issue is how much battery is used for heat and ac..

This vehicle is eco friendly and upgrades to some great features.
I just got this car a few months ago and I love it. There was a problem a couple times with the keyless unlock of the car where it wouldn't unlock and open. But other than that, I do love it's features, the heated seats and the different driving modes, power, hv, ev, eco mode. Normal. I love that I could charge it but it only gives 25 miles. It's perfect for short distance, but gas is amazing as a full tank takes drives 300 miles.

Hybrid with great gas mileage and power when you need it!
This is 3rd Prius. Love hybrid! Do not like removal of keyless entry for all doors. Would like easier hatch closing. Media phone interface does not work well with android. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Bluetooth phone works ok but Alexa & other media is not stable. Updates are not happening to car software even though we check availability. Great gas mileage!

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Prius?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Toyota Prius offers excellent fuel economy with hatchback versatility, it also earns high owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Toyota Prius at 4.5/5, enjoying the very quiet cabin at highway speeds, but doesn’t like the offset instrument panel in the dash.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Toyota Prius Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Toyota Prius include excessive brake wear, noise from the wheels, along with some delayed gear changes. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other hybrid and compact cars on the market.

Excessive brake wear is the most widespread complaint on the 2020 Toyota Prius, showing up at around 15,000 miles. The front brakes, in particular, tend to wear down quicker than on other cars. Changing out the front brake pads costs around $150, while rotors cost around $300 if they’ve been damaged too.

Noise from the wheels has also been reported by some 2020 Prius owners at around 30,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a worn-out wheel bearing which has to be replaced. Changing out a wheel bearing costs around $350, depending on local labor rates.

Delayed gear changes are another issue mentioned by some owners within the first 1,500 miles. There are transmission control module software updates which improve the speed of the CVT. Most dealerships will install these updates for free during normal servicing, while others charge around $100.

There are no recalls on the 2020 Toyota Prius, which is better than a lot of other small cars on the market. Having no recalls means that none of the problems have been widespread or affected the safety of the car.

How Long Will the 2020 Toyota Prius Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Toyota Prius can last around 300,000 miles, which is longer than many other Hybrids like the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than other cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $378 per year.

As a used 2020 Prius reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the drive belt idler pulley for $150, mass airflow sensor costing $240, along with the radiator hose, which costs $450.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is great and includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa. Optional upgrades include a larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, which has a premium JBL audio system.

Standard safety features are excellent for a small car, and include:

  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Head-up display
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Adaptive headlights

What Engines Come In the Toyota Prius?

The 2020 Toyota Prius primarily comes with a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.8-liter four-cylinder gas engine combined with an electric motor. This setup produces a total system output of 121 horsepower. Power is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). As for efficiency, the combined fuel economy for this setup is rated at an impressive 52 MPG. Performance-wise, the 2020 Prius takes around 10.5 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Toyota Prius Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Prius?

The 2020 Toyota Prius boasts a design that is not only eco-friendly but also emphasizes comfort for its passengers. The vehicle’s interior is designed with supportive seats that can comfortably accommodate both short and long journeys. Both front and rear passengers are treated to ample headroom and legroom, making it a suitable choice for families or those who often travel with passengers. The cabin is also insulated well from road and wind noise, providing a quieter ride, especially at highway speeds.

The suspension, tuned more for comfort than sportiness, does a commendable job in absorbing road imperfections, providing a smooth and composed ride quality. Moreover, the Prius comes with an array of modern amenities and tech features, such as automatic climate control and an infotainment system with a touchscreen, enhancing overall comfort and convenience. In summary, the 2020 Prius offers a pleasant and comfortable environment that makes it a practical choice for daily commutes and longer road trips alike.

How Much Storage Space Does the Toyota Prius Have?

The 2020 Toyota Prius offers a combination of cargo space and small storage areas that make it a practical choice for those who prioritize fuel efficiency without sacrificing utility. The Prius provides up to 27.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which is enough room for daily shopping trips, a couple of large suitcases, or even a small bike with its wheels removed.

If you fold the rear seats flat, that space expands considerably, accommodating larger items. Furthermore, in the cabin, there are a variety of smaller storage spots, including door pockets, a center console bin, glove compartment, and cup holders. These spaces are convenient for items like smartphones, wallets, drinks, and small personal belongings. Altogether, the Prius effectively combines its reputation for eco-friendly driving with the everyday utility drivers expect in a modern hatchback.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Toyota Prius was introduced for the 2016 model year.

2015: Rearview camera system is now standard on all models.

2016: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with all new styling, more technology, and an upgraded engine.

2017: Toyota Safety Sense driver aids are now standard across all models.

2018: No serious changes from other years.

2019: All-wheel drive models added to the lineup, minor styling changes, and the models have been renamed.

2020: Improved 7-inch touchscreen is now standard on all models and has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2021: Small changes to the driver safety software.

How Does the Toyota Prius Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Toyota Prius is a great small car and better than other hybrid vehicles, offering excellent practicality paired with an extremely efficient hybrid powertrain, which helps it earn our recommendation for shoppers.

The Toyota Corolla is a small car, which can be found for about $2,500 less. Where the Toyota Corolla stands out is with a more responsive driving experience, while the Toyota Prius is more fuel efficient. We recommend the Toyota Prius for most shoppers, but both are similar compact cars.

The Honda Insight is another hybrid, which is available for roughly $2,000 less. Passenger room is a bit better in the back seats of the Honda Insight, while the Toyota Prius offers more standard technology features. We recommend the Toyota Prius since it’s a more efficient choice with better long-term reliability ratings.

Back of car does get snow covered obscuring all rear tail lights.
Good gas mileage, well built, good in the snow due to its weight. Well built, very reliable. Very little extra maintenance. Had a good ride with heated seats. Oil viscosity 0 16 can be hard to find other than from dealership, local Walmart shops do not carry this product.

The vehicle is really great so complaints are minor. Driving is very smooth.
The storage space and room in front is quite small which makes it inconvenient with wallets, phones, etc. The inside can be hard to clean. It is a smaller car so uncomfortable with 5 people. The electronic features do not always work smoothly for example the blue tooth.

Very good gas mileage. Has plenty of room.
The car is new enough, that we have not had any problems. We had a Prius previously that was 15 years only. We did have to replace the big battery, but it was just under 150,000 mile and it was replaced on warranty. We drove the car more than 400,000 miles.

Good in the snow due to its weight.
It is a prime so the electric range is a bit limited, would like to see it increased. 50 mile range would be more acceptable. Very reliable vehicle with good to average comfort options. In winter the rear lights do get completed covered which make brake lights impossible to see by other drivers.

I love everything about this vehicle. As a college student, the fuel mileage is wonderful and it is a car that I can keep for a long time. Do not care for the backup beep, it is not needed. Silly, I know, but the cup holders are small. Biggest problem is you cannot pop the “trunk”, have to physically get out and open the back, cannot do it from the car or clicker. However, it has amazing gas mileage and drives so smooth!

New car. Wishing it was more like my old car.
It is very pretty and gets great mileage. I loved my previous Prius and wanted another one. I do not like that I have to use my key to open all the doors but the driver’s side. That is not convenient when your hands are full. I do not like that the map and visual map screen is gone and that to have a service it has to be paid for monthly. Not as convenient as when I could use an update CD and not as safe since I cannot see it on the screen. I do not love my new car as much as my old one.

My Toyota Prius prime limited has seat warmer, 11 inch display, premium sound and multiple safety devices such as blind spot, lane assist and speed assist when in cruise control. The Prius prime limited has the navigation and home link, allowing me to use my car as the garage opener. The one issue I have had with this car is that the screen would reset while driving. Small car, environmentally friendly.
The Prius is an excellent small car. The mileage is amazing with the plug-in prime and it gets 25-30 miles on the electric battery per charge. Gas mileage is great. I get about 54 miles per gallon combined around town and highway miles. A lot of technology comes with car without buying the most expensive trim level. The Optimus prime of Toyota.
The 2020 Toyota Prius prime is an excellent vehicle. The performance is great as it has 3 different types of driving modes to choose from as well as being able to save on gas, very cost efficient. The car features apple CarPlay as well as brake-alerts, these are my two favorites. I purchased the le which is the lower model, the one thing that is different from the higher model is the larger screen on the dash. The higher model also includes leather seating, but I prefer the fabric seats because it does not get as hot as leather and also does not have a strong leather smell.

I wish I had purchased it with AWD. I chose not to do that I could save a couple thousand dollars and I was lucky enough to find a used car of the new model year.

He is a member of the Automotive Press Association, and keeps up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry. Over the years, he has driven hundreds of cars, working on many of them. His mechanical experience evolved from modifying off-road trucks as a teen to focusing on automotive electrical systems as he got older. He now specializes in reviewing used cars as an automotive journalist. Some of his favorite brands are Toyota and BMW. The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of his favorite vehicles of all time since they’re built to last forever and can go anywhere. One of his current cars is a Lexus LX570, built on the same platform as the 200-series Land Cruiser, but it’s a better value in the used market.
