Produced from 2007 to 2017, the Patriot is the most affordable SUV carrying a Jeep badge. Although the  2016 Jeep Patriot scores 4.3 out of five stars in Vehicle History owner reviews, reports of failing brakes and faulty power steering are cause for concern.

Key Points

  • The 2016 Jeep Patriot has one recall, two open investigations, and over 300 complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The SUV’s only recall covers flawed crankshaft sensors that could cause engine stalls while the vehicle was in motion.
  • The NHTSA’s investigations revolve around several owner complaints about airbags not deploying properly.
  • Power steering and brake pedals going out intermittently while driving has put many owners in hazardous situations.
  • Water leaking into the 2016 Patriot’s cabin is the SUV’s most common issue posted on the Car Complaints website.

2016 Jeep Patriot’s Single Recall is Over Defective Crankshaft Sensors That May Cause Engine Stall

Jeep’s affordable compact SUV, the Patriot, had a rough time proving to be reliable since its debut in 2007. Although most of the sport utility vehicle’s problematic years are behind it, the 2016 Jeep Patriot is accompanied by some concerning safety issues.

Not so long after entering the market, the 2016 Patriot was recalled for a faulty crankshaft sensor that reportedly works intermittently, leading to engine stalls. Dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor in affected vehicles for free.

Two Open Investigations Indicate 2016 Patriot Has Serious Airbag Problems, Including Systems That May Not Activate in a Crash

Due to many owner complaints, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened two investigations over the 2016 Patriot’s airbag problems.

The first investigation pertains to a flawed airbag sensor that determines whether or not deployment is required in a crash.

The second investigation concerns models equipped with Takata airbags that have inflators that could degrade after prolonged exposure to humidity and significant temperature change.

In case of deployment, airbag inflators could rupture and strike passengers with metal pieces, leading to severe injuries.

Many Owners Have Complained About Malfunctioning Brakes and Power Steering

In addition to numerous complaints about engine stalls that led to a recall, owners have complained to the NHTSA about other alarming problems, such as the power steering assist going out intermittently at various speeds.

Owners note that when the power steering goes out without warning, it requires excessive strength to maneuver the SUV. Also, several drivers mention that their 2016 Patriot swerves to the right when trying to keep it in a straight line at highway speeds.

There are also many complaints registered with the NHTSA about the brakes not functioning properly. According to reports, despite depressing the brake pedal, owners were unable to stop the car even at speeds as low as five mph. Two of the 16 complaints about the brakes mention the issue led to a crash.

Some owners have also mentioned that the gas pedal intermittently goes out and fails to send engine power to the wheels. Reports on Car Complaints indicate that owners have dealt with malfunctioning gas pedals after only 27,200 miles of driving.

Water Leaking From the Sunroof Into the Cabin Has Caused Trouble for Many 2016 Patriot Owners

Another widespread issue with the 2016 Jeep Patriot is water leakage from the sunroof, which is a recurring problem mentioned on Car Complaints. According to reports, water leaks could appear even before putting 1,000 miles on the odometer.

Owners on the popular Jeep Patriot forum and Reddit echo dealing with leakage problems.

“After a heavy rain, when I get in and shut the door, a couple drops of water drip out from the edges of the buttons that turn on the cabin lights or sometimes out of the clear lamp housings themselves,” said one owner on Reddit.

In most cases, the problem comes from rubber tubes from the sunroof drain pan getting clogged up, forcing water to collect in the pan, and ultimately reaching the cabin through dome lights or an A-pillar.

2016 Jeep Patriot’s Recalls are Few, But Some Serious Problems Affect its Overall Reliability

Based on real owner reviews on Vehicle History, the 2016 Jeep Patriot scores 4.3 out of five stars.

Car and Driver tested the 2016 Patriot and said it “can’t really be called fun to drive” due to CVT issues, engine noises, and poor interior quality.

Like previous model years, the 2016 Patriot suffers from serious problems like engine stalls and defective brake pedals, making it fall short of its rivals.

According to Kelley Blue Book, a used 2016 Jeep Patriot has a price range of $14,700 to $21,053.

Within the same price range, a 2016 Subaru Forester offers a more potent powertrain, better standard tech, and more impressive fuel economy with up to 32 mpg on the highway.

What is the Biggest Problem With the Jeep Patriot?

Whining, jerking, overheating, and early failure of Chrysler’s CVT transmission is the biggest problem reported by Jeep Patriot owners across most model years. The Patriot’s sunroof and rear window seals can also fail below 5,000 miles, causing massive water leaks in the hatch, spare tire well, and from the Jeep’s dome lights.

Do 2016 Jeep Patriots Have Transmission Problems?

The 2016 Jeep Patriot was recalled for faulty crankshaft and camshaft position sensors that cause engine stall, and 51 NHTSA complaints exist for the 2016’s powertrain. Owners report loss of acceleration power, shuddering, and jerking that is variously related to transmission, electronic throttle, and sensor failure.

I'm hoping things get better
I just recently purchased a 2016 Jeep Patriot with the automatic hybrid transmission, i.e., I can still downshift or upshift, without the need for a foot clutch. This vehicle drives differently than any I have been previously accustomed to. My main issue is that it feels like it's going about 10 mph faster than the speedometer reads. This gives me the feeling of not being fully in control. At 45 mph, it feels like 50 or even 55. Downshifting doesn't slow it down around curves or downhill as much as the standard transmission Jeeps I've driven in the past, hence, I still have to brake to get it to a speed that allows me to safely negotiate steeper curves or downhill slopes. Even when removing my foot from the gas pedal and allowing it to coast, I'm still going faster than I feel safe or comfortable going. Maybe I shall eventually get used to this and be able to adjust accordingly, but for now, it's still too new to me and I still find it unsettling. That's not saying there's anything wrong with this vehicle. I just haven't previously experienced anything like it.

Mid-size SUV with a smooth ride and functional size.
I like the size of my car, as it's very practical, but I have had maintenance issues (gas leak) and the brakes were worn down in less than 3 years. Furthermore, it seems cheaply made. The windshield has cracked once. I like the size of my car, as it's very practical, but I have had maintenance issues (gas leak) and the brakes were worn down in less than 3 years. Very tough and reliable vehicle.
The rear struts were subpar and had to be changed under 50,000 miles. No power locks or locks, Bluetooth is horrible does not connect automatically to connect, transmission sounds like a windup toy, slow subpar mpg, tires are hard to get popular size 16' rims. All that being said as of 1/21/20 I have put 103350 miles on it and have not had any major issues with my 2016 patriot it has been extremely reliable.

First Jeep experience, terrible decision. Do not recommend.
I got my car with 12 miles brand new. I've put in 2 grand on fixing my car. It's 2018 I've had it since March 2016, and I've had to get a whole new battery, throttle body, spark plugs, and tires more than 5 times!! Sensors went out in my car also. I also was on time for oil changes etc. This was and is my first car. I would not recommend this car to people.

I am trying to sell this jeep to buy another jeep that is more user friendly.
Transmission issues, difficulty shifting properly, shifter issues, not going completely into park, electrical issues, starter sensor issues also almost impossible to install aftermarket stereo components without extreme and potentially life-threatening issues, difficulty removing and reapplying doors, and soft top, back plastic impossible to see out of.

Electrical failure
Don’t mind being stranded but one of these. Repairs upon repairs , just to mention. Ifs and hopes for this little 4x4 vanished after being let down so many times. I’ve owned Jeep vehicles twice and both very unreliable. Highly recommend another manufacturer even though your plants in my state I expected better quality.

It drives smooth and nice on gas.
It is a decent car with some problems. The heat shield constantly falls off and seems to happen in most of these vehicles after researching. It does drive nice and I like that I can use it for traveling. I do wish the dash system was a bit upgraded but other than that it is not a horrible car but not the best.

My jeep patriot has overall been an unpleasant experience.
The quality of the vehicle has not lasted long, I have never completely felt safe in my jeep. It has very limited features. I am not able to see the miles I have left when my gas tank goes on. Overall, I am not happy with it even when I bought it brand new. I wish I have advised a different vehicle.

2016 jeep patriot sport 2wd.
Transmission issues with jumping between gears, had to replace the intake manifold twice. Doors do not open very wide. Great for off-roading. Very comfortable seats. Radio is the basic version with a CD player and Bluetooth. The gas cap breaks easily., had to replace it after 2 years of ownership

Do not buy a jeep patriot if you want a dependable car.
This is probably the worst car I have ever purchased. The speed sensor on the tires has been replaced 3 times. It currently is out and I can tell because the transmission shifts badly or not at all and the abs keeps going out. It never throws a code though even though the light for abs is on.
accountCircle Kim F on July 6, 2021
Dependable but with some flaws.
There have been reported transmission problems to the dealer and they said they fixed the issue with a software update. At the time the powertrain was still under warranty. The 'fix' they did - did not fix the transmission slipping, it has gotten worse and now the powertrain warranty is out.

Not satisfied with body or performance.
No backup warning noise which makes It Difficult to back up without hitting the curb or back of the trunk. Transmission slips. Very small trunk area. Deceiving which makes it hard to see through the mirror if filled to the top. The ride is nice but you feel every little bump in the road.

Jeep's are better and able to go through some difficult spots.
Abs and traction lights on after 5 months of having vehicle, sensors, and bearing had to be replaced. Like the ability to let seats down and load items. Roomy, comfortable, sensors notify you when the oil needs changing. The engine and motor are up high enough to get to.

Good but not great. Reliable yet not financially manageable
Brakes and tires have to be replaced periodically and the vehicle is a gas guzzler. The windshield is extremely fragile and the vehicle barely maintains speed. Auto start barely works and the Bluetooth will completely disengage while on a call or listening to music.

Jeep Patriot problems found by a current owner
I have had problems with the AC and heating for the cabin. The motor seems to jump or skip sometimes when accelerating. When resetting on a cruise the car will drop to 4th to climb back to set speed as quickly as possible raising rpm to an alarming level
accountCircle Pamela W on October 24, 2021
Great vehicle overall, completely satisfied.
My only complaint is the jerky thing it does when I decelerate and then accelerate again. Also, the skid light comes on and won't turn off but does go off on its own eventually. The engine will also come on but nothing is wrong.
accountCircle Laura S on December 14, 2021
This vehicle is great for joy rides with sunroof and GPS navigation.
Upon purchasing this Jeep Patriot, there was a crack in the windshield, the brakes were shoddy and I feel as though I didn't get a decent price. I really wanted the renegade.
accountCircle Sally N on March 24, 2022
Do not buy Jeep Patriot too many problems.
The gas guzzler, always has recalls, and makes noise every time I turn to the left when it rains water goes in through the back window even though it is been fixed 4 times.

The day in life of the horrible Jeep
The performance, in the beginning, was good but having it for 2 years there has been too many issues. Having under the hood issues after just 2 years and regular upkeep.

Front wheel sensors and water seals
Both front wheel brake sensors and the front right wheel bearing went out around 75k. The sunroof and hatch water seals leak. Cheap Jeep!

Jeep patriot 2016 is a cool car.
A lot of mechanical issues now. It is reliable and can really run for a long time. I have 40,000 miles on it and it still runs.

Not interested in a Jeep Patriot
We've already had transmission problems. There are no power windows or locks. The very basic model for a very expensive price.

Overall decent car.
Car jerks and idles are weird when driving. Common problems with this jeep.
