2018 Chevrolet Cruze Problems are Comprised of Transmission and Engine Issues, and Malfunctioning Brakes

The 2018 Cruze is a reputable compact sedan with just a handful of recalls and few registered complaints. However, there are reported problems with the Cruze’s powertrain, which accounts for most of the complaints, with issues affecting the engine and six-speed manual transmission.

Key Points

  • Three recalls have been issued for the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze including missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator, insufficient coating on rear break caliper pistons, and a fuel leak after a rollover crash. Only 66 complaints have been registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • The model’s recalls raise safety concerns because of the risk of fuel leaking and catching fire and reduced braking performance, as well as the possibility of a transmission leak.
  • A defective clutch in the six-speed manual Cruze is the most widespread problem with the 2018 Cruze, with owners reporting a loss of power, inability to shift gears, and hearing unusual noises.
  • No recalls have been issued to address any of the car’s transmission or engine issues.
  • Despite its recalls and other noted problems, the Cruze is regarded as a reliable and safe vehicle, earning a five-star safety rating on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2018, although this nameplate has had good and bad years.

Safety Concerns Prompted Two Recalls of the 2018 Cruze

The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze comes in four trims: L, LS, LT, and Premier and is equipped with two four-cylinder engines: a 153-horsepower turbocharged 1.4L or a 137-horsepower turbocharged 1.6L diesel.

Available transmissions include:

  • Six-speed manual
  • Six-speed automatic with the gas engine
  • Nine-speed automatic with the diesel engine

Despite being a safe car with excellent crash test ratings, the 2018 Cruze has raised some safety concerns that prompted three recalls.

The first recall involved 2016-2018 Cruze LS vehicles with a gasoline engine and a tire inflator kit instead of a spare tire. These vehicles may have increased fire risk and may leak gasoline following a rear-impact crash and a rollover.

GM addressed this recall by installing a lock-ring on the fuel tank to shield the unit’s vapor pressure sensor from damage in a rear-impact crash.

The second recall involves missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator end cap that could result in a transmission leak and loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of fire. GM replaced any missing bolts free of charge.

Customer Complaints Reveal Powertrain Issues That Create Dangerous Situations

Almost half of the 66 owner complaints registered with the NHTSA encompass engine and transmission problems.

The clutch in the six-speed manual has been the most problematic powertrain component, with a range of issues including the clutch not engaged to a complete loss of the clutch.

The main problem with the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze is that no recalls exist for any reported clutch complaints. Some owners mention replacing the clutch under warranty only to later report that the problem recurred and persists.

There are a couple reports of the car catching fire after experiencing engine problems. In most cases, these failures occurred without the check engine light illuminating or any error message on the dashboard.

Still, several drivers that have experienced engine problems received a notification from OnStar stating that an issue with the StabilTrak stability control system was detected and required service.

Several Owner Complaints Mention Underlying Problems With the Cruze’s Braking System

There are 10 complaints registered with the NHTSA regarding brakes on the 2018 Chevy Cruze.

Drivers describe problems such as the brakes making squeaky noises, leaking fluid, and even failing entirely, resulting in crashes.

These braking problems point to an insufficient coating on the rear caliper pistons. This failure prompted a recall in August 2018, where General Motors recalled 210,628 vehicles from its 2018-2019 lineup.

The remedy involves bleeding the brake system of the affected vehicles for free.

Despite Some Powertrain Problems and Engine Issues, the 2018 Cruze is a Reliable Vehicle with Good Safety Ratings

While it’s true that the 2018 Chevy Cruze has some flaws that have led to a handful of recalls and customer complaints, this vehicle has good safety ratings.

Additionally, this Chevy model has strong customer reviews for reliability that put the Cruze as one of the best compact cars of 2018, just behind the Toyota Prius and Corolla.

Although 2019 was the final model year of production of the Cruze since Chevy decided to discontinue, this car was a best seller for many years, so there are plenty of Cruzes on the road.

Therefore, it won’t be hard to find parts for years to come should you consider buying one.

Bought a diesel for longevity
I was very excited when I found this diesel sedan at a reasonable price. I drive between 40,000 and 60,000 miles per year in city traffic and long runs. That is why I was looking for a diesel. I was looking forward to low maintenance vehicle that would last. The engine is great but I have had three transmissions in the car. The one that was in the car when I bout it, the one I replaced at about 115,000 miles and the one that is being replace now at about 209,000 miles. Is there an aftermarket transmission that will last longer than 100,000 miles for this car?

Nothing but problems
I bought it brand new, within the first couple weeks i had to have a whole new computer put in. I've had the stabilitrak fixed multiple times. Now i have a cylinder 2 misfire in my engine and its back into the shop and now my warranty might not cover it. Not to mention for the last couple months my side detection hasn't been working and my airbag sensor goes off when I hit a bump.

6 speed manual transmission failed after 90k km
Stay away from this models. After 20k km clutch failed and it was changed under warranty. At 90k km I could not shift any longer. Gear box to be replaced. Car was out of time warranty by 5 months and they offered to cover 25% of the costs. Still, a huge expense for a 5 year old car. Definitely there is a problem with this model.

The potato salad automobile.
This car is nothing more than a unit of car. It lacks power, imagination, or anything to distinguish it from any other car. I have had parts literally pop off when I open the doors. It is where dreams go to die on four wheels. I would buy a motorized potato salad before buying this car.

It is the base model does not have cruise control.
When I first got my vehicle it ran great. Now having a few years it uses a lot of gas more and has to fill it up every week or so. My vehicle does not want to shift when it should be. When going up hills or when it is coasting. It does not have cruise control or power seats.

Never buying Chevy again.
After a couple months I have had multiple problems with this car. The brakes are constantly messing up and there is something wrong with the fuel tank that I am constantly taking my car to the shop. I can't drive it long distances because I am afraid it will break down.

Very average car.
I had issues with the speakers needing to be replaced twice. Sometimes the clutch does not grip when I am shifting. Sometimes the reverse does not work. Generally the car is good but it does have problems every once in a while with shifting not grabbing or working.

The Cruze has a turbocharged v6 engine.
The Chevy Cruze is a good vehicle for in town driving and highway commute. The fuel mileage is decent getting around 400 miles to a tank of fuel, one of the few problems I had with the vehicle was that it seemed like it ran through oil life extremely fast

EngineIssues
Bought this car new in 2018. Told needed an engine replacement due to cracked piston. Warranty company did an engine tear down and determined engine failure was due to broken piston rings. Engine had on just over 48k miles on it…pathetic.

Transmission seized at 90k miles
I am pretty good at taking care of my car and I can’t believe that the transmission seized so early on with No warning signs. It lasted me 11 years but I honestly don’t think I will buy Chevy again… this was just a bad experience…

My vehicle is a good starting car, nothing fancy or unique.
There are recent issues I am having with the engine. Misfires have happened and the engine has already been rebuilt. I have been at the dealership 5 times since the initial problem. At this point, it has been an inconvenience.

It's a good car
One other problem is the rear passenger side door does not seal all the way. When you are driving at highway speed you are looking around to see if a door is open, it's that loud.

Blind Spots Are Horrible
It has difficult blind spots so it takes some getting used to. The transmission takes a long time to shift and even longer when you use the auto stick option.

Engine
My car's engine - the monster piston sound and also the turbocharger turns off for a long time - when I put my foot on the gasoline quickly

Good and bad about the Cruze.
Has a turbo engine. Problem: it seems to need oil changes every 5,000 miles if the turbo is weak. Absolutely love this car though.

It is a basic car, if you are a basic person you will like it.
I have only had one problem with the power steering going out, but it was covered in the lease and fixed in a day.
