The full-sized Ram 1500 pickup delivers decent mileage and great ratings overall. But look past its eye-catching exterior and you’ll see it also has 11 recalls, some about driveshafts separating while driving, and a possible faulty cruise control system that won’t disengage.
Key Points
- The 2018 Ram 1500 has been named in 11 recalls and had problems with tailgate latches, infotainment system glitches, and the EGR cooler on the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine.
- Other owner complaints about the 2018 Ram pickup truck totaled 201, mentioning problems with suspension and steering, a wobbly ride, and rattling.
- While some 2018 Ram 1500 recalls might cause unease, they are largely associated with several other Stellantis models. Regardless, all are handled at the automaker’s expense.
- Two recalls that we feel stand out include one where the driveshaft may separate entirely and another where the cruise control system can’t be shut off.
- Despite reports of a possible rear driveshaft fracture in 2018 models, the 2018 Ram 1500 had industry-topping reviews, won some major awards, and remains lauded by owners today.
Vehicle Rollaway was a Problem for the 2018 Ram 1500 and led to One of the Most Serious of the Pickup’s 11 Recalls
The 2018 Ram 1500 came out at the end of its fourth generation (2009-2019) and sold more than 536,000 units in the U.S. alone. It had some facelifts and felt modern, with improvements and extended suspension options. Plus, it is a beast of a truck with good mileage.
However, the 2018 Ram 1500 was named in 11 NHTSA recalls. Additionally, owners registered over 200 complaints about issues that may present a safety risk.
One of the more serious recalls was issued in February 2018 for unintended vehicle rollaway due to drivers being able to inadvertently shift the transmission out of Park without pushing the brake pedal and without a key in the ignition. Vehicles affected included certain 2017 and 2018 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 Cab Chassis, and 5500 Cab Chassis models.
Some 10,160 Ram trucks were recalled due to a possible rear driveshaft fracture in 2018 models. Also, there was a concern the tailgate could open unexpectedly. This recall involved models from 2013 through 2019.
Other Notable Recalls on the 2018 Ram 1500 Include Airbags that Can Rupture and an Uncancellable Cruise Control System
Another recall that may raise the hairs on the back of your neck, side airbags that can rupture. Basically, it can send literal shrapnel towards occupants. This included over 212,000 Rams, but includes models from 2015-2020 and also pertains to 2500 and 3500s, so it’s less likely than it might first seem.
What’s more, the 2018 Ram 1500 (and over 4.8-million other Stellantis vehicles from 2014-2018) also may have an uncancelable cruise control system. Imagine, you’re cruising at 65 mph, approaching a car, when suddenly you can’t disengage the cruise control.
Both of these have fixes available, so if affected, a trip to your local Ram dealer should do the trick.
2018 Ram Pickup also Faced Complaints about Tech Glitches in an Infotainment System that may Randomly Shut Off
Combing through the 200 consumer complaints filed with the NHTSA about the 2018 Ram 1500, one of the most prominent issues involves glitches in the infotainment system. “Navigation system started jumping around to different screens while traveling in an unknown area,” reports one 2018 Ram owner on the NHTSA site. “It almost caused an accident several times from [me] being startled, and from losing visibility of the road ahead.”
Over in Vehicle History’s nearly 250 consumer reviews, another Ram owner noted that he too was having issues with the infotainment system. “Changed out three entertainment centers already,” he said. “They don’t work, or shut off randomly. My current one has no FM radio, and Apple CarPlay doesn’t work. The rest of the truck is awesome, but this radio thing is making me hate my truck!”
2018 Ram 1500 has Many Recalls, but a Closer Look at the Pickup Reveals a Capable, Reliable Full-size Truck
We would feel comfortable recommending a 2018 Ram 1500, especially with the excellent Hemi V8. Recall repairs should be already handled. However, the EcoDiesel does continue to cause ire with drivers, so definitely get the warranty. The auto industry, and mass-produced goods of all ilk, do have recalls as a common occurrence. And while the 2018 Ram 1500 might have 11 recalls, a closer look at the numbers is reassuring.
Ultimately, used pickup truck shoppers should not feel guilty ruling out the 2018 Ram for any issues. But if you are looking for a truly luxe interior and a bulletproof Hemi, the 2018 Ram 1500 has a lot to offer for a price tag under $40,000. With so many options and amazing utility, 2018 is a model year to consider.
