The 2.0L 4Cylinder engine of the 2000 Toyota RAV4 requires the use of 4.3 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil. In warmer climates, 10W-30 may be substituted. In all climates, You may substitute SAE 5W-40 conventional motor oil, but only for short durations. I'll briefly explain why below. The numbers in an oil's weight refer to viscosities at different temperatures -- the first, at startup and the second, at operating temperature. Using a slightly thicker oil may seem like a quick way to save a few dollars, but it'll cost Your engine efficiency. This can lead to premature engine wear, which can in turn lead to premature engine failure. Do YourseLFA favor and use the recommended oil, even if it's a few dollars more per change.
