The 2001 Ford F-150 is specified to use a Full synthetic oil SAE 5w-20 for all weather temperatures. The truck has multiple engine options so make sure You find which engine You have for the correct capacity. The motors are listed as A4.2L v6 and the 4.6 v8 will require 6 quarts of oil. The 5.4 v8 triton will require 7 quarts of oil as stated by the manufacturer. If You are planning on replacing the oil make sure to get an oil filter as well because it will need to be replaced at the same time. The cost for oil will vary depending on the brand but a quart of oil starts at $5 and can get up to $12 per quart. The regular service interval iS3,000 to 5,000 miles or every 6-8 months. Since this is an older truck with high mileage it will benefit from more frequent oil changes.

Add 1qt. Transmission fluid to your oil and drive around for a little while, 50 miles approximately. This won't hurt the engine but will loosen any sludge build up and allow more of the unwanted oil to drain.In the process, you may free the stuck lifter.
