It's best to use A5W-30 synthetic oil in all 2002 Volkswagen Jetta engines, it holds up well and doesnt break down very quickly, only needing changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles . A conventional 5W-40 oil can be used but tends to breakdown a lot quicker, needing changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The capacities varry depending on engne size, the 1.8l inline-4 gas engine and 1.9l inline-4 diesel useS4.8 quarts, the 2.0l inline-4 engine requireS4.4 quarts and the 2.8l v6 engine needS6.1 quarts. To change the oil You'll need a 19 millimeter end wrench, Jack and stands, a drain pan and some clean towels. Follow the owners manual instructions on jacking the car and place the jack stands under the frame. Place the drain pan below the oil pan and remove the 19 millimeter hex head drain plug located on the rear of the oil pan. Once all the oil is drained remove the oil filter, and replaced with a new one, reinstall the oil drain plug and fill with oil.

The 2002 Volkswagen Jetta's base 1.8L inline-4 engine uses 4.8 quarts of oil. The 1.9L inline-4 diesel option needs 4.8 quarts of oil. Both the 2.0L inline-4 optional engines (engine codes AVH V and AZG K) require 4.4 quarts of oil. The 2002 Jetta with either of the 2.8L V6 engine options (engine code AFP 5 or BDF 6) need 6.1 quarts of oil. All of the engines listed above use the following viscosities: 5W30 synthetic oil or 5W40 non-synthetic oil.
