The 2003 Ford Explorer'S4.0 liter V6 engine is equipped with 5 US quarts of 5W-30 motor oil and the 4.6 liter V8 useS6 US quarts of the same lubricant. Lube and filter changes should be scheduled every 7,500-10,000 miles or 12 months if using fully synthetic lubricants, or every 3,000-5,000 miles or 6 months, if using conventional oil. The advantages of using synthetic vs conventional products include better lubrication among moving parts, a longer interval between service appointments and enhanced effectiveness under adverse weather conditions. An oil with a thinner viscosity moves more easily in colder temperatures, coating engine components efficiently and providing better protection against friction and corrosion. Cost for a lube and filter job for the Ford Explorer ranges between $110-$123 in parts and labor.

The 2003 Ford Explorer's two versions of 4.0L V6 engine (engine code [E] SOHC and [K] Flex) use 5 quarts of 5W30 synthetic oil. The optional 4.6L V8 available in the 2003 Explorer requires 6 quarts of 5W20 synthetic oil.
