The three engine options available are 5w30 or 5w40 synthetic oil in the 2004 BMW X5. 7.9 quarts of oil is needed for the 3.0l v6 base motor. 8.5 quarts of oil is needed for both the 4.4l v8 engine option and the 4.8l v8 engine option. The cost for the oil will range from $5 - $10 depending on the brand and quality and it is recommended to use synthetic instead of conventional oil. The conventional oil is cheaper but will also be less effective and will need to be replaced sooner than the full synthetic brands. You should replace the oil every 3000 - 5000 if using conventional oil and 5000 - 7500 when using synthetic oil in Your vehicle.

3.0 liter is not a v6, rather an inline 6 cylinder.
