The 2004 Ford F-150 uses SAE 5w-20 oil. The 4.2l engine has a capacity of 6 quarts. Oil is important because it is a lubricant for the engine parts, it helps protect the emission system, and it can enhance fuel economy. The cost of an oil change for Your F-150 is between $50 and $60 for labor and between $90 and $100 for parts. You should get an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. You will know that it is time for an oil change if You notice increased engine noise, shaking while idling, excess exhaust, an oil smell inside the vehicle, and of course if You see the Check Engine or Oil Change lights come on.

The following engines available for the 2004 Ford F-150 all use 6 quarts of 5W20 synthetic oil: the 4.2L V6 (base), the 4.6L V8, the 5.4L V8 (engine code [3] 3), the 5.4L V8 (engine code [M] M), and the 5.4L V8 (engine code [Z] Z). The 5.4L V8 (engine code [5] 5) requires 7 quarts of 5W30.

7 quarts of 5-20 is what is specified, but if you have the 5.4 3v engine I highly recommend that you put in a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil, and 5-30 for the rest. I have used Motor craft SYnthetic Blend every 5,000 miles.
