The standard 3.0-liter V6 engine in the 2006 BMW X3 has a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds, which is pretty comparable to other competitors in this segment. The vehicle has a payload of 1,025 pounds and the tongue weight iS300. The engine puts out 225 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque @ 3,500 rpm. Although the vehicle offers a decent towing capacity, the ground clearance is only 8.0 inches, so it's not suitable for off-road use. The fuel capacity for the 2006 X3 is 17.7 gallons. The vehicle returns on average 15 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for a combined 17 mpg. You can expect those numbers to be a bit lower while towing a trailer. Also, keep in mind that if You tow regularly, Your oil change interval may be more frequent.

My BMW 2006 X3 did not have a factory built in hitch! Can I install one and will the four bolts handle the load and weight of my 16 foot trailer camper that weighs 3500 pounds?
