The 2007 Chevrolet Equinox'S3.4L V6 engine tops off with 4.5 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, but it can also accept SAE 5W-40 conventional in a pinch. However, the use of the latter is not recommended, due to its inclination to oil break down and inferior viscosity. While SAE 5W-40 may be a little cheaper during Your oil changes, You'll pay for it in the long run. The "5" in both oils represent the viscosity at start up -- the same. But once the engine gets to operating temperature, Your difference is now "30" to "40", and lower numbers are better. The SAE 5W-30 may cost a bit more, but it'll keeping Your engine running more efficiently for a longer period of time.

The standard engine for the 2007 Chevrolet Equinox the 3.4L V6 has an oil capacity of 4.5 quarts. The oil should be 5W30 synthetic oil unless the local weather temperature is below -20 F at which point it is necessary to switch to 0W30 synthetic oil.
