The 2008 Toyota Prius has a 1.5 L 4Cylinder engine that needS5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil. It has a capacity of 3.9 quarts with a filter and the torque for the drain plug is 28 ft/lbs. The meaning of 5W-30 iS5 is the viscosity or thickness of the oil at startup with W standing for winter and 30 being the thickness or the viscosity at operating temperatures. Oil will not last forever so it needs to be changed, preferably on a schedule which also includes changing the oil filter. For the Prius the oil and filter should be changed every 5,000 miles. The cost of a change if taken to a mechanic is anywhere from $40 to $60 in labor costs.

My 2008 Toyota Prius has 15W-30 molded into the oil filler cap. That is the only weight and viscosity that has been used in the car.
