The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu oil type and capacity iS5w-30 and 7.5 quarts. Having high quality oil is key for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. Knocking noise may show up from the engine. Bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. A common problem is an awful burning smell. This needs to be inspected as soon as possible or the car might explode. You could experience bad gas mileage. Your oil needs to be replaced eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be issues with the engine.

IT DOES NOT take 7.5 quarts (4 cyl) or 9.7 quarts (v6). The 2.4 takes 5 quarts, the 3.5 takes 4 quarts, and the 3.6 takes 5.5 quarts.

Somebody who runs this website needs to remove the mara D first posting information with all incorrect quantities. As another person commented prior if you Google the vehicle and that engine hers is the first snippet that comes up and she is 100% wrong, clearly knows nothing. It is irresponsible of this site to leave that there as they have been fully informed it shows up as the first and clearest listing if you put the vehicle year model engine in Google and search for oil capacity. Once again, whoever manages this site needs to remove her 100% incorrect posting as it would clearly destroy an engine if followed

The 2009 Malibu with the 3.5l engine takes 4.02U.S. Quarts. Mara D is crazy if she thinks you need 9.5 quarts for the 3.5l

This is absolutely incorrect and can destroy your engine. The owners manual states it takes 5.0 quarts with a filter change. I called the local dealship to verify. Much misinformation is being circulated about the quantity.

The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu recommends using only an oil that meets GM Standards GM6094M. The SAE classification 5W-30 is the best engine oil for the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4L L4 engine oil holds 7.5 quarts (7.1 Liters) while the 3.5L V6 and 3.6L V6 engine holds 9.7 quarts (9.2 Liters).

The coolant system holds 9.7 quarts. The oil capacity is 5- 5.5 quarts depending on the engine size.

The amount of oil shown is way too much and will cause serious engine damage. I think the original poster gave the numbers for Anti-Freeze Coolant, thinking they were for oil. The scary part is that I just Googled the amount before I did an oil change on my daughter's car, and the snippet saying it took 7.1 was at the top of the search page. Fortunately I've been around long enough to know a small engine doesn't take that much oil, but I wonder how many people will ruin their engine by blindly accepting it as being correct?
