The 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander came in a number of different models -- across which, two different engines are used. You may either have the 2.4L 4Cylinder, or the larger 3.0L V6. In both configurations, the recommended oil type is SAE 5W-20 full synthetic (though SAE 5W-30 may be substituted in emergency situations). The 4Cylinder takeS4.2 quarts, and the V6 takeS4.5 quarts. Though the SAE 5W-30 may be a bit cheaper, it has an inferior viscosity to the SAE 5W-20, which can negatively affect engine efficiency over the long term. At operating temperature, they have a difference of 10 viscosity units -- this can be enough to prematurely wear an engine, and reduce its effective reliable lifetime.

The approved engine oil for the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander is the 5W-20 for all models. The 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander ES and SE models oil capacity is 4.5 US quarts (4.3 liters). The oil capacity on the 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS and GT models is 4.2 US quarts (4.0 liters).
