The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 useS8 quarts of SAE 0W-20 motor oil. GMC recommends that You use synthetic oil each time that You change it. There are two major types of motor oil on the market today, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is an older technology and is made using petroleum, and synthetic is newer and engineered in a lab to give You better wear protection. This wear protection also helps synthetic oil last longer. This means that You should only change synthetic every 7,500 miles compared to every 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. Be sure to check Your oil at least once a month to make sure that it is full and free from debris or burning.

The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 uses a dexos1 SAE 0W-20 synthetic oil, either full synthetic or synthetic blend as long as they meet the dexos 1 standard. The oil capacity is 8 quarts, reduced from 8.5 by a GM tech bulletin responding to overfills.
