BMW recommends using Original BMW engine oil in the 2017 BMW X3. A viscosity rating of SAE 0W-30 or SAE 0W-20 is used in the gasoline engines, or an equivalent that meets the BMW Longlife-01 FE rating standards. The diesel engine uses 0W-30, or an equivalent that that meets the BMW Longlife-12 FE rating standards. Both the gas and diesel 2.0L 4Cylinder engines can hold 5.3 quarts and the 3.0L 6-cylinder can hold 6.9 quarts. Be vigilant in checking the oil level, if the level is too low, serious damage can occur. Also, engine and catalytic converter damage can occur if too much oil is used. BMW condemns the use of oil additives, claiming that they can damage the engine.

The 2017 BMW X3 has different oil types and capacities by engine type. The 2.0L four cylinder (regular and diesel) uses SAE 0W-20, a fully synthetic motor oil and can hold 5.3 quarts in RWD and 5.1 in AWD. The 3.0L four cylinder engine runs on SAE 0W-30 synthetic oil, with a capacity of 6.9 quarts.
