While the Subaru Crosstrek may look similar-ish to the rugged sport utility vehicles known for their towing capacities, it doesn't quite match their capability. The maximum tow rating is just 1500 pounds -- due, in part, to the undersized 2.0L 4Cylinder engine. It's only capable of producing 145 lb-ft of torque. Payload is a small but respectable 1,113 to 1,230 pounds. The maximum stated tongue weight comes in at 200 pounds, but it's not recommended that You exceed 150. Trying to haul just about anything with the Crosstrek can pretty quickly lead to Your transmission overheating, which can soon lead to transmission failure. If You're looking for a vehicle capable of towing, plenty of other options exist; You'll want to skip the Crosstrek.

For 2018 Subaru has capped the tongue load at 150 lbs., and the towing load at 1,500 lbs. The 2018 Subaru CrossTrek's box-4 engine has a torque output of 145 lb-ft.
