Toyota recommends that You change the oil in Your 4Runner every 5,000 miles regardless of whether You are using synthetic or conventional oil. When You change the oil out You should also replace the filter so that the clean oil does not pick up any contaminants from the old filter. Toyota also recommends that You use synthetic oil. Synthetic gives You better wear protection than standard conventional oil because it is engineered to give You more lubrication and break down slower. You should still inspect Your oil at least once a month. You will want to make sure that it is full and free from any signs of debris or burning.
