2018 Toyota 4Runner Review: Extremely Reliable SUV With Great Off-Road Capabilities

Alex Showalter
Jan 17, 2023

The 2018 Toyota 4Runner lasts over 300,000 miles with some very minor Bluetooth and A/C system issues. At $28,625 to $41,950, it’s expensive, but worth the cost for one of the most reliable SUVs on the market.

Off-road capabilities are fantastic, there’s a good amount of cargo space and the engine is very reliable.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The handling is clumsy at highway speeds, it’s high to climb into and there’s a lot of road noise.

Is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2018 is a great year for the Toyota 4Runner, although it’s a bit outdated when it comes to technology. Owner reviews praise the very durable engine, low ownership costs, along with the off-road capabilities.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are more durable than luxurious, the seats are reasonably comfortable, cargo space is also good for an SUV of its size.
  • Reliability 10/10 – There are no major problems on the 2018 4Runner, making it one of the most dependable SUVs in the world. Models from 20102022 are all fantastic choices.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is good from the standard V6 engine, although the 4Runner is a heavy SUV making it not very nimble.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2018 4Runner is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera while parking sensors are optional.
  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is poor at up to 18 MPG, giving 414 miles of range from the 23 gallon tank. Gas costs are $23 more than average, at $229 per month.
  • Value 9/10 – The 2018 Toyota 4Runner is expensive, although it depreciates slowly, making it a great long-term value.

It does it all, tow, ride comfortably, how many people, and feels luxurious.
I have not had any problems with my 4runner. The 4runner has been comfortable in all seats when riding on road and off road. I depend on my car everyday and I know it will get any job done. I have been able to tow a small RV with no issues. I have a dog in my car everyday and it has not shown any wear or tear whatsoever. The features for the stereo has been exceptional. They are very high end and have worked amazingly. The stereo system is very nice and clear. I would purchase a 4runner over any other car in the future.

Love it, but needs improvements.
Overall love my 2018 4runner. It has the option to go into 4 wheel drive when needed, but not my favorite to drive. Leather interior and overall great, but having an issue but my radio. We've already replaced it once but it already needs to be replaced again. It does lack the “standard” safety features you are seeing in other cars which makes it frustrating, but it is the perfect size and overall a great SUV.

Best SUV available today hands down!
This is my second Toyota 4runner. Because they are durable. Dependable. Beautiful. And safe. All the room without that bus feeling. All the cool features but not a small car. Safe. I feel safe in Toyota’s vehicles. I love my Toyota 4runner. My family does as well. I will always have a 4runner.

2018 4runner trd off-road- great long term investment.
One thing I would improve on my 4runner is adding more climate vents to the rear passenger area. The only vents in the rear passenger area are the foot vents below the two front seats. Because the interior is black, this is a problem in the summer; it takes a long time to cool off the main cavity in the vehicle. In general with Toyota vehicles, I have also found that vents constantly blow some air through them even when the fan is off. Another improvement I would make is that the headlights seem dim. This could be an issue with the tilt of the reflector light or because the vehicle is higher, but I find myself constantly wanting to use the high beam lights. One of my favorite features is the back glass sliding down like a window. So far, the vehicle has been very reliable. I have put over 15,000 miles per year on this vehicle and have done only the recommended maintenance for each mileage point. The eco fuel bar is especially helpful for ensuring that I am driving the vehicle to optimize mileage performance since the vehicle is larger. The four wheel drive options are fantastic. I have never gotten stuck in a field or ditch with this vehicle. Additionally, there have been no recalls on this vehicle in the three years that I have owned it. The performance fabric on the seats has held up really well so far- even though I have a dog.

I like the way my vehicle looks. It has a sporty look that I was looking for in a vehicle. It's comfortable and I feel safe driving it and my family riding in it. There is nothing I dislike about it.
It is very comfortable and I feel very safe in it.

The Camry's infotainment systems will be implemented and include a standard 7.0-inch touch screen and an 8.0-inch touch screen on the XSE and XLE V-6 models. The 8.0-inch system includes a nine-speaker JBL audio system and a Wi-Fi hotspot. We expect Toyota to add Apple CarPlay in some settings. The 2019 Camry will also offer a 10.0-inch head-up screen and a 7.0-inch dashboard screen (from the standard 4.2-inch screen).
The Camry's engines are likely to move to 2019. The 2018 Camry engine options include the base I-4 engine of 203 hp (206 hp in the XSE trim) and the optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pumps 301 hp. Both engines are backed by an eight-speed automatic that directs power to the front wheels. The Camry Hybrid 2018 uses a 2.5-liter I-4 paired with two electric motors for a total 208 hp system output, although Avalon's 2019 version of this technology is good for 215 hp. By 2018, fuel economy figures for non-hybrids ranged from 22/32 mpg city / highway on V-6 to 29/41 for I-4. Camry fuel economy numbers vary between 44/47 and 51/53 mpg depending on the level of equipment.

2018 4runner: extremely durable with the comfort and space everyone wants.
Very comfortable. Easy to maintain. Easy to use in all conditions. No problems in the rain or snow. No leaks in the sunroof. Great sound system. Extremely durable. Plenty of room. To haul things around and easy to clean as well. Running boards are a nice feature. Heating and cooling work very fast as do the seat warmers. I have leather seats and those are super easy to clean as well. Great gas mileage for a bigger SUV.

Toyota 4runner: pros and cons.
Pros: I love the size of my vehicle. Not too big and not too small. It is great for dogs because of the rubber floor mats and the ability to open the back window. I also really like the look of the 4 runners. Cons: not a lot of head room (really uncomfortable for tall people). Horrible gas mileage. No power. Really slow to accelerate.

Performance of a 4runner Toyota.
When it comes to the 4runner Toyota model, the model is pretty big; however, there is not enough room inside. It is a basic car with basic capabilities and basic comfort. There could be more comfort and different features to change up the performance and the capabilities.

Not happy with the 4runner but it's kept due to holding its value.
The ride is rough and uncomfortable feels like I feel every bump. Does not have too much power either as far as throttle response and on the freeway. The leather interior is not comfortable either. Space is not that great for being a full-mid size SUV. However the car is dependable and holds its value.

Needs more luxury options!
Before purchasing a Toyota 4runner, I drove an Audi q5. I feel as though the Toyota 4runner limited should have more luxury options for the price you pay. The following options should be included: blind spot assist, rear door automatic open/close, and more comfortable seating.

My 4runner in detail and experiences I have with it.
It works really well and I never have problems with it at all. It works well if you want to go mudding or live out in the country. My kids love how roomy it is. There are two ac vents in the back for the kiddos. I have one with a third row so I can fit more people. It is silver and a four door.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota 4Runner?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Toyota 4Runner is an old-school body-on-frame SUV with very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 4Runner at 4.3/5, praising the excellent off-road capabilities, but doesn’t like the lack of safety features.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 4Runner a 4.6/5, enjoying the strong V6 engine, but owners don’t like the firm suspension.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Toyota 4Runner Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Toyota 4Runner include Bluetooth connectivity issues, a moldy smell from the A/C system, as well as premature brake wear. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to some other midsize SUVs, leading to lower repair bills.

Bluetooth connectivity issues are the most widespread complaint from 4Runner owners in the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improve the reliability of the Bluetooth connection. Most dealerships will install software updates for free, while others charge around $50.

A moldy smell from the A/C system has also been reported at around 40,000 miles. The most likely source of the problem is a clogged A/C drain line. When the line gets clogged water backs up in the line, eventually leaking on the floor of the 4Runner on the passenger side. Cleaning out a clogged drain line costs around $100, depending on local labor rates.

Premature brake wear is another issue with the 4Runner, particularly for people that tow often. The extra weight from a trailer causes the brakes to wear down faster. Replacing the brake pads costs around $400, while a new set of rotors is roughly $600 more if they have been worn out as well.

There are

5 recalls on the 2018 Toyota 4Runner, which is similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for the fuel pump which may fail, causing the engine to stall. Toyota will replace the fuel pump assembly in affected models for free. Other recalls cover incorrect labels and a loose grille, which are not as mechanically serious.

How Long Will the 2018 Toyota 4Runner Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Toyota 4Runner can last over 300,000 miles, which is much longer than other popular midsize SUVs including the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to some other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $470 per year.

As a used 2018 Toyota 4Runner reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the wheel bearings for $450, purge valve costing $150, as well as the shocks & struts which cost around $650.

accountCircle Casey D

Sometimes the seats can be a little uncomfortable on longer drives, but this vehicle is more of a hauling/off road type of vehicle. It is not for ultimate luxury but getting the job done.

accountCircle Liz M

accountCircle Mary D

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is relatively good with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen. There are more powerful stereo systems available as optional upgrades. Unfortunately, it still does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Safety technology is basic

for a midsize SUV from 2018 with only a standard rearview camera. The only optional upgrade available are front and rear parking sensors.

Is the 2018 Toyota 4Runner a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Toyota 4Runner is a very good value since it’s an extremely dependable midsize SUV. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $28,625 to $41,950, making it more expensive than a VW Atlas or Honda Pilot. When new, the price range was $34,810 to $45,160. What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner was launched for the 2010 model year.

2015: New TRD Pro model introduced with off-road features.

2016: Slightly higher towing capacity, cell phone navigation added to base model.

2017: Trail and Trail Premium models renamed to TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium.

2018: No changes from earlier years.

2019: Upgraded Fox Shocks in TRD Pro model, Nightshade edition with black trim available.

2021: Standard LED headlights on all models, new wheels on the TRD Pro model.

How Does the Toyota 4Runner Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Toyota 4runner is one of the best midsize SUVs on the market since it’s an extremely long-lasting choice with fantastic off-road capabilities, making it a great choice for shoppers.

The Lexus GX 460 is another midsize SUV which costs around $10,000 more. Both the Lexus GX 460 and Toyota 4Runner are built on a similar base platform, while the Lexus GX 460 has more power from a V8 engine as well as a nicer interior. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner since it’s a better value if you don’t need the luxury, although both are very long-lasting SUVs.

The

Toyota Highlander is a competitor from Toyota, which is about $5,000 less. Passenger room is a bit better in the Toyota Highlander, while the Toyota 4Runner is much better off-road with its higher suspension. We recommend the Toyota Highlander if you know you’ll only be in town, while the Toyota 4Runner is better if you plan on going on adventures.

Toyota reliable and comfortable ride for years.
The vehicle is comfortable for an SUV it provides a smooth ride with enough height to see clearly on the road while driving. For the most part no major blind spots. Inside is leather with heated /cool seating which is comfortable. It has Bluetooth capabilities which is nice for music to play and has backup camera as well as a display screen with navigation. The navigation sometimes is not the smoothest but Bluetooth from your phones GPS works well. Also connects through the display for phone calls and text messages to be read and responded through voice over which is helpful when driving and needing to keep hands on the wheel. The back of the vehicle has ample space for loading groceries to a couch if the seats are placed down. Has strong cooling and heating system both in the front and back as well as self control for passenger and driver. Steering wheel has volume control, search control and cruise control buttons for easy access. Overall the performance and reliability of the Toyota has been wonderful for driving and having these years. Only downfall for myself is that it does take a lot of petrol and not great for the environment so something for the next generation to be addressed. Driving on the road or gravel roads is a smooth ride with little bulbs or issues with steering.

Have no problems with our 4runner. I recommend this runner very highly. Great for space of grandchildren. Also great for my husband, when he goes to his favorite stores. We go to our daughters house a lot and bring them stuff. Plenty of room for our stuff and theirs.

Amazing car that has a sleek design and drives great
The car drives very smooth! Sleek interior. Back seats are kind of small but still bigger than a car. There is a lot of room in the back to store outdoor activity items. The led screen is I really organized and clean looking. Easily seats five people and a lot of supplies in the back of the car

High reliability and performance.
My Toyota 4runner is highly reliable and comfortable. I selected the limited trim to maximize the height of the vehicle, for the best driving visibility. I have always been very happy with its performance. I am confident that its reliability and performance will continue for many years.

Toyota 4runner exploration.
Overall handling is superb. Highway and offroad capabilities with just stock options provide opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Having the ability travel seamlessly from highway to off road without needing to change tires or worry about suspension clearance is phenomenal.

Comfortable for road trips.
Comfortable, good maintenance plan, like the trim. Wish the lights were auto on/off instead of manual. Paint seems to scratch easily but overall i'm happy with product. I have a very good dealership and am happy with the service. Parts can be expensive.

The Toyota 4runner is a great vehicle and is highly recommended.
Great performance and reliability. Great gas mileage and superior handling. The vehicle performs as advertised and I have had no problems with it so far. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone shopping for a new sports utility vehicle. Great vehicle.

I like the way my vehicle looks. It has a sporty look that I was looking for in a vehicle. It's comfortable and I feel safe driving it and my family riding in it. There is nothing I dislike about it.
It is very comfortable and I feel very safe in it.

A ride for adventure and exploration.
This car is great, especially when you are traveling around in more hazardous weather conditions. The ability to shift between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheels is amazing, offering a choice of power and stability against efficiency. This car is best for people who live in colder climates, who often receive a great deal of snow in the wintertime, but this car will not get stuck as the l4 capabilities will let you get of a situation such as getting stuck in a ditch.

Best SUV.. 4runner of course!
The 2018. 4runner limited is a great vehicle. It has a very good amount of power for both on and off road scenarios. It has plenty of good features such as; air ventilated seats, power ports, automatic floor boards, and sunroof. It is both rugged and elegant. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking at an SUV.

My car has camera that helps me back up. It has a GPS build in. The sun room is.
My four runner is amazing! I love the way it drives the color is beautiful I am in love with my new car. I live in Colorado and a four runner is what I need to get to work and home. The color is a beautiful dark blue. My wife loves it and well we have been able to take to the mountains. To Denver and eve to family vacation to New Mexico.

Toyota 4runner is all I'll ever own!
Best vehicle I have ever owned. Very comfortable for long trips and short city drives. High ceiling and plenty of legroom. Gas mileage is decent as well. Usually $38 for a full fill up, depending on gas prices. Very durable interior, almost impossible to scratch.

Most reliable car ever! I would recommend this car to every driver out there!
The Toyota 4runner is super reliable. It sells itself and has a 5th generation history, could use a little more power/torque, and a power liftgate, auto start. I would suggest buy the 4wd to feel better about this great vehicle. Fun to drive with a feeling of top quality and service. I cannot wait to get a new one only to continue upgrading. If you get the sports mode, it can be a little bumpy, but still considerably smooth. Since the seats are not made of leather, the seats are very comfortable for long road trips!

4runner details ins and out.
I have not had any issues with this vehicle. I love how it drives in the winter. I wish I had automatic start. It is very reliable and durable. Many aftermarket parts are available to customize your vehicle. It is a bigger SUV but handles well. I love the roll down back window.

Great vehicle, very reliable. Long lasting.
Great truck. Very reliable. Looks great. Long lasting. No problem at all after a few years. Very comfortable, kids love it. Great vehicle for the entire family. This vehicle has far exceeded my expectations. The minimal features make it very easy to use and maintain.

I love my Toyota 4runner!
I absolutely love my 4runner! It is very reliable and good gas mileage! Lots of room inside and the trim is high end. It is so easy to drive and park. It looks very sporty and sleek! I haven't had one mechanical problem with it yet, I take it in for oil changes etc but I haven't had to pay to fix anything.
accountCircle Gail C on February 18, 2021
Could definitely use some improvements.
Love the suspension, cubic feet, color, Drivability, control and how it takes curves without the feeling of a turnover. What I do not like is that the GPS system is not updated and mostly what I do not like is the position of the screen. I do not like is that you have to take your eyes off the road to see it and if the sun is shining into the car you cannot see the screen at all.

5th gen 4runner best all around.
I have now owned both a 4th gen and a 5th gen 4runner and I absolutely love them both. The 5th gen I have now is extremely comfortable both on and off road. If you want something that you can literally take anywhere once it is equipped right then the 4runner is your best option. I have taken mine plenty of places off road and driven plenty of highways miles and I think it is the best all around vehicle for both.

Perfect off road experience.
So totally reliable. Love the off road capability on sand and the room in back for all our gear. The paint is a high quality and has held up to wear and tear. First SUV I have owned where nothing has broken in 2 years of ownership. Everything feels sturdy and road noise is minimal. Drives like a truck but with more comfort.

Toyota has done an amazing job with all the upgrades and details they put in.
When looking for a new car, I researched the 4runner. It had all the requirements that I was looking for like, 4wd, the screens picture clarity and response to touch is so good. Also the ride is very plush & smooth and the seats are so comfortable & durable, love the soft-textile material.

We will always have a 4runner in our driveway.
It is a bulkier SUV but that is the kind of size we wanted. It is not too big either and that was a bIg deciding factor on choosing this vehicle. Very clean looking on the inside with leather seating and it just always feels maintenance free. The gas mileage is pretty good as well.
accountCircle Kathy L on February 6, 2021

Roll all the windows down including rear window and just feel the breeze.
I really love my 4runner, it is very rugged and fun to drive. I have had no issues with it for the almost year I have had it. I get many compliments on the way it looks, many of my friends ask to drive it and are looking to get their own. Really love the sound system and the feature of rolling down the rear window.

4Runner Review and personal opinion
Excellent family car! Love it for camping and long road trips. Fits my wife, kids and both my big dogs perfectly! I have absolutely no complaints! Has a nice bit of power under the hood as well! The TRD is such an awesome package and seats are probably the most comfy seats I've sat in a vehicle!
accountCircle Laura T on February 3, 2021
Amazing vehicle, lots of space, even the middle part of the back seat pulls down for an armrest with cup holders.
The 4 Runner is by far my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. I sit up high enough to see everything without the vehicle feeling too big. I haven't noticed any blind spots. The seats are super comfortable and you can adjust them a few different ways. The back window even rolls down which is great for when I have my dogs in the back.
accountCircle Ally G on February 3, 2021
I love my sr5 premium and the way that it rides.
So far I have not run into any problems with my 4runner! I needed a larger car because I was traveling the interstate more, and this has been the perfect vehicle. The 4runner is leather seats, 3 row, sr5 premium and it has added features. The mpg is good for an SUV and it drives very comfortably.
