The only models of the Ford Escape that can be flat towed are second generation vehicles. 2019 and Current models, both FWD and 4WD, cannot be flat towed. A number of factors determine whether a vehicle is equipped for recreational flat towing behind a camper, and online sites exist that allow RV enthusiasts to check whether the make and model of their vehicle qualifies. Most automatic transmissions can suffer severe damage if the manufacturer has not supplied the truck or car with a "transmission disconnect" feature. Due to the design of the Escape, maintaining all four wheels down for an extended period of time could force manual operation of the transmission without lubrication. Some vehicles require constant pump operation to keep the transmission's moving parts lubricated and clear of extreme damage.

Ord factory specifications do not approve flat towing (or dinghy towing) for the 2013-2020 ford escape models. It is recommended that a flatbed, tow dolly or transport trailer be employed for these models, unless there is an extreme emergency. Improper towing could cause damage to the vehicle's transmission.
