The 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 uses dexron-ViAutomatic transmission fluid. When shopping for fluid make sure to choose one that it meets these specifications. You should check the transmission fluid level at least once a month. Make sure the engine is running at idle in the car is in park. Pull the dipstick from the tube and wipe it off using a clean cloth. Put it back into the tube making sure to go all the way in. Pull it back out and verify the location of the oil level on the tip of the dipstick. If You're checking the fluid when the vehicle has been parked for more than a few hours make sure to go by the COLD mark. If the car has been recently driven and the fluid is at operating temperature go by the HOT mark.
