The 2000 Toyota Tundra uses a timing belt rather than a timing chain for both of the 3.4 L V6 and the 4.7 L V8 engine. They did end up changing to the timing chain for all versions starting in 2010 and have been using it since then. One of the reasons why they might have switched to the chain is because it requires less maintenance to be put into it. For vehicles with the chain it is usually meant to last for the life of the vehicle but belts needs to be changed every so often. Since the Tundra uses a belt, it needs to be changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles or so. The cost to change the belt is anywhere from $310 to $390 in labor costs and extra for parts.
