ABS was only available in the 2001 Jeep Cherokee with models that had the Dana 35 rear axle. You can identify which axle You have by crawling underneath the rear of the vehicle and looking at the passenger side upper webbing of the differential will have a casting number, 35C means it is the Dana 35 and You might have antilock brakes. When You turn the ignition on the instrument cluster lights wool come on and if the light is working properly and You have ABS in the vehicle the ABS light will illuminate. You could also look next to the master cylinder to see if there is an ABS pump installed if there is nothing next to the cylinder You can rule it out.
The 2001 Jeep Cherokee does not come with anti-lock brake system, the ABS feature is an optional feature. The anti-lock brake system controls the brakes at each wheel, so the wheels do not lock when braking abruptly or when braking on slippery surfaces.
