The 2001 Toyota eco has a timing chain, which connects the crankshaft to the dual overhead cams. The timing chain is located inside the engine just behind the Serpentine belt. There are oil ports that allow the engine oil into the timing chain case and keeps the chain lubricated. When properly aligned, the crank and camshafts are synC-HRonized to open and close the valves. The intake valves open allowing the fuel to be injected into the cylinder then closes to allow the fuel and air mixture to be compressed. The timing will signal the coil to send current to the spark plugs which will fire and burn the fuel in the cylinder. Now the exhaust valve opens, allowing burnt the gases to exit the engine and then closing, the cycle repeats itself on each cylinder.
