The 2003 Honda Civic has a timing chain, rather than a timing belt. This is a good thing, as the chains tend to last for the lifetime of the vehicle. As such, Honda will usually cover replacement under a special extended warranty which lasts for ten years or 100,000 miles, whichever happens to occur first. The chain should be checked every 12 months or 10,000 miles. If You do need to replace the chain Yourself, You can expect to pay between $184 and $473 for parts alone. If it gets replaced by a mechanic or auto tech, You will need to pay between $140 and $248 for labor.

The 2003 Civic is equipped with a timing belt, instead of a chain. Timing chains tend to last longer, but are also generally more expensive.

My wife has this car. We just changed the timing belt for the second time in its history. Timing belts are typically good for 100k miles. Belt, not chain.
