The 2003 MitsubishiMontero uses a belt to control the timing. The timing belt connects the crankshaft and then is routed around some idler pulleys and then goes around the camshaft. The purpose of the belt is to synC-HRonize the position of the crankshaft and the camshaft to one another. When properly timed the engine should run smoothly. If the tension loosens, the belt can skip a tooth which would throw off the engine timing. This will cause the car to idle roughly, possibly failed to start and if bad enough could destroy the engine. When the timing is off one of the valves could open up at the wrong time and the top of the piston can slam into it. This would not only wipe out the valve but will crack the piston creating a hot spot and quickly blowing up the engine.
