The 2004 Toyota Camry 2.4 liter, 4Cylinder engine uses a timing chain, rather than a timing belt. This is a good thing, as a timing chain is expected to last for the lifetime of Your vehicle. The Camry has a life expectancy from 10 to 15 years, or 150,000 to 175,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the chain does become damaged or broken, it will need to be replaced. You can expect to pay between $320 and $573 for parts alone. If You choose to have it replaced by a service professional or automotive technician, You can expect to pay an additional $60 to $140 for labor.

In 2002, Toyota switched the 4-cylinder engine from belt to chain which is still current to 2020. In 2007, Toyota switched their 6-cylinder to chain.

Tell Marty he's wrong, the 2004 Camry has a Chain, and if you buy one used for under $5,000 bucks drive it forever and dont worry about a chain ever breaking, i had ayr 2000 maxima with chain and drove it 388,000 miles with a chain, it went to the junkyard from transmission and clutch problems and no heater, nothing wrong with the chain. So drive on and dont worry.
