The 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander use a timing belt to synC-HRonizes the crankshaft with the camshaft which controls the timing of the opening and closing of the valves. The timing belt has grooves on the back side which right in teeth on the pullies. When the belt is extremely worn it can jump a few of the teeth and throw off the timing reduce the engine power and cause mIS Fires. If the timing is off enough it will not allow the vehicle to start because the timing between the introduction of fuel and the opening and closing of the valves are completely off. A worn belt could cause the top of the pistons to hit one of the valves, which would require extensive repairs.
