When equipped with A4.0-liter engine, the 2005 Toyota 4Runner has a timing chain. Models powered by the 4.7-liter V8 engine have a timing belt. A timing chain is comprised of links that interact with the camshaft and crankshaft to ensure these parts are constantly synC-HRonized. Sometimes, friction can cause small fragments to break off and fall into the oil drain pan, which results in a rattling sound. In more serious cases, the chain breaks and needs to be replaced. The average cost to replace this part on A4Runner is $1,040 to $1,350. Labor makes up about $950 to $1,200 of that estimate. A timing belt is made of rubber and features teeth that interact with gears of the other parts. Unlike a chain that usually lasts the life of a vehicle, a belt needs to be replaced periodically. In the 4Runner, this averages $530 to $760 with labor comprising $280 to $360 of that amount.

If you break your timing belt or chain you may have serious problems. A piston just might slam against a valve and catastrophic failure is possible.
