The 2008 Toyota Highlander comes with a timing chain on the engine. 2007 was the year that Toyota changed their vehicles over from using timing belts to using a chain, and in my opinion that is a great change. The timing belt of the past needed to be changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and was an expensive service. With a chain You should be good for over 300,000 miles without needing any service. I still recommend that You check Your chain at least once a year though to make sure that it is free from debris or damage. You also should still change Your water pump every 100,000 miles and that is driven by the chain.
