The 2009 Dodge Journey with the 3.5L SOHC V6 has a timing belt and the 2.4 L 4Cylinder engine uses a timing chain. The belts need to be replaced every so often and the chains shouldn't have to be changed as long as regular oil changes are done on the vehicle. The reason why the belt needs changed is because it is outside of the engine and is exposed and the chain is on the inside and isn't exposed and gets help from the engine oil. For the journey You should replace the belt every 102,000 miles or every 102 months which iS8.5 years, whichever occurs first. The chain is meant to last for the life of the vehicle but it can go bad and if it does the cost of a new one is around $50 to $110 or so.

2009 Dodge Journey has a timing belt and tensioner. It should be replaced around 100,000 miles per dodge. Itextremely highly recommended to replace water pump as well since there is significant labor to do it later if not done with timing belt. And most parts places sell all necessary parts as a kit
