The 2011 Volkswagen Golf TSI's 1.8L 4Cylinder turbocharged engine uses a timing chain. There are advantages and disadvantages to each apparatus; depending on who You ask, You may hear that one or the other is better. However, most automotive experts will agree that they'd rather have a chain. The main advantage to timing chains is that they're typically good for 250,000 to 300,000 miles -- it's a likelihood that the rest of Your car will fail before the timing chain does. However, the tensioners are known to go bad sooner than this, and replacement can be much more expensive than a belt. Make sure You take great care of Your engine, and hopefully it'll last You near (and beyond) the 300,000 mile mark.
