Almost every available engine option for the AudiA4 froM2008 to 2015 comes with a timing chain. The 2.0L TDI I4 is the only one that uses a belt. The main reason that most of the newer engines use the chain is because of how sturdy they are. They're a strong piece of steel that is meant to last You for as long as Your engine keeps running. They chain stays lubricated by Your engine oil and makes sure it runs smooth and doesn't have any friction when going past other components. If the chain dries out it may make contact with the other parts and cause damage to the chain as well as other things which makes for expensive repairs. -

A 2012 audi a4 will come equipped with a timing chain.
Chain, however, they have a defective tensioner from the factory. Best to have it changed at 90,000 miles.
