The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox uses a timing chain instead of the belt. It is generally better to use a chain instead of a belt because the chain should last for the life of the vehicle. The reason why it should last for the life of the vehicle and the belt doesn't is because it is housed inside of the engine whereas the belt is outside of the engine and gets exposed to things. If a vehicle uses a belt it should be changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles but chains only need to be inspected every 150,000 miles or so. You can inspect the chain by checking its tension and looking at the sprockets. It is not unheard of for the chain to fail but it is also not very common.

Note the 2.4l eco tec motors are notorious for timing chain issues where it becomes “loose” and slaps the valve cover

Timing chain that loosens severely and can wear hole in valve cover and destroy guides and guide bracket; leaving metal pieces in engine.
