The 2012 Ford Transit Connect has a timing chain which is sealed in the engine so is receives constant lubrication. The timing chain connects to the sprocket at the end of the crankshaft to the sprockets on the ends of the camshafts. When the chain is properly aligned on the sprockets, the engine will run smoothly, if the chain were to skip a tooth, the engines performance will be off. If the timing if off more than a few degrees, it could cause a valve to get smashed by the top of the piston. If the chain gets stretched or breaks it could cost up to $700 to have it replaced the chain only costing about $50.00 of that, the rest if labor costs. This is not a job I would recommend to the average car owner because You pretty much have to take the car completely apart just to get to the belt
