The 2012 Hyundai Elantra came equipped with a 1.8 L 4Cylinder engine and there was no option for any other engine on all trim level. This engine will make use of a timing chain. Timing chains are meant to last for the life time of the vehicle. It is possible that they can fail due to manufacturer's error or if any major damage occurs to the vehicle. If one of these situations happens to You and You do need to have the timing chain replaced You are looking at spending between $150 and $250 for a new timing chain kit. If You want to take it in to a shop to have the replacement job done for You the average cost will be around $900 for parts and labor.

The top answer here is disappointingly incorrect. I have a 2012 Hyundai Elantra and I can definitely tell you it's a timing belt, not chain, and has an interference engine. I'm not sure why so many here are answering it's a chain. However, my vehicle was sold in Canada so it's possible differences existed between the US and Canadian models in that year, though I doubt it.
Frank I have a touring 2012 I want to know if it has a chain. To.
