The 2012 Kia Forte comes equipped with a timing chain rather than a timing belt. One of the reasons it is better to use a chain instead of a belt is because it usually doesn't need to be replaced unlike the belt. The belt usually needs to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles or so but if You want You only need to inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so. The chain usually lasts for the life of the engine because it is inside the engine and isn't exposed unlike the belt which is outside of the engine and is exposed. If something happens to go wrong with the chain You can notice it if You hear unusual sounds or if there is timing issues with the vehicle.
