The 2013 Acura MDX comes with a timing chain on the 3.5L V6 engine. This is a component that can wear out and will need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. The timing belt keeps all of the engine timing accurate. It keeps all the components in sync and if it were to break there could be catastrophic engine failure. It is important to get the belt changed before it completely wears out to prevent this from happening. It is also advisable to get the water pump replaced when You do the timing belt service because it is in the same area and can save You money on labor costs if it were to fail at a different time.

The 2013 Acura MDX comes with a timing chain and not a timing belt, which is meant to last for the life of your vehicle engine

The above answers are wrong. The MDX has a Honda J37 V6 engine with BELT driven cams and therefore needs to have this changed at a specified interval (typically 90 to 105K miles or 7 years). Honda 4-cylinder engines in recent years such as the K20 and K24 are chain-driven. The MDX has never offered a 4 cylinder, only V6 and all Honda V6s are belt driven.

I've struggled with this so want to add my two cents. The V6 has a timing chain, the four cylinder has a timing belt. Hope that helps others here.
