The standard, or base model, 2015 Ford Escape does not come equipped with a continuously variable transmission, also known as a CVT. Instead, it has a SRX speed automatic transmission. Don't lose hope, however. As it turns out, the Ford Escape Hybrid for that year does have a factory installed CVT. Signs of tranny problems include rough idling and vibrations from the engine. You also may experience sluggishness while driving, and grinding noises. The transmission may begin to slip, and You might experience difficulty with moving the gear shifter. If the transmission fails, it will need to be replaced. You can expect to pay between $248 and $984 for parts alone. If You have it done professionally, You will pay an additional $339 to $758 for labor.

The 2015 Ford Escape comes either with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.

Lose hope? The CVT is the bad transmission although newer ones are improved. The Toyota eCVT is about as reliable as the CVT gets because planetary gears and no belt or chain like older CVT transmissions. Virtually every vehicle manufacturer has had problems using CVT's and many have abandoned them such as all but one version of the 2014 and newer Compass and Jeep Patriots. The CVT type transmissions do get somewhat better gas milage but have extremely poor reliability. Some brand new vehicles have had their CVT's fail with even less than 60k miles.Don't be fooled,Transmission repair or overhaul is very costly and ranges between $3,500 to $8,000 with the CVT models in the higher cost price ranges and is never only a few hundred dollars unless it's an external repair of some sort.
