FroM2003 until 2017, all Honda Pilot engines, models, and configurations used a timing belt. Honda recommends changing this every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on vehicle age and usage. This accounts for routine wear and tear, and protects You as a driver when You're operating the vehicle. While it can be a pain to shell out this much money every hundred thousand miles or so, it's much less expensive than it would be to change a timing chain. The advantage there is that they're good for an estimated 250,000 miles. However, if something catastrophic happens (and believe me, it does -- I've changed more than one), You'll be stuck with a $3,000 or more bill. So while You may feel You're getting nickeled and dimed, there's a chance You're getting off easy.
