The 2016 Ford Explorer does have a recall for potential suspension defect that could lead to reduced steering control. The power steering fluid needs to be replaced every 75,000 miles. Along with changing fluids, You will hear noises from steering parts. A bad bearing will make a nasty sound. A loose bearing will become irritable to the ear. Having great steering is key for changing lanes and moving about on the road. You will someday come across some issues though. The rack mount could become faulty. Steering fluid may leak at one point. It might turn to one side. The steering wheel might become stuck. The steering pump might become loose and that will be disaster for Your vehicle. The strut bearings could become bad.

I too am having a problem with the rack and pinion on my 2016 Ford Explorer. Problem is no dealer has the parts to fix it. I also think it should be a recall

2016 Ford Explorer rack and pinion failure at 105K miles. A safety recall on this known issue should be expected on such a popularly driven Ford vehicle.

I'm having problems with my 2016 Ford Explorer XLT power steering rack and pinion Ford told me 3500 to get it fixed but I found out it's a recall on power steering rack for 2016 Ford Explorer XLT I looked that up on vehicle history. The park Aid was light was on when I bought it I asked them what was that they said it was nothing really you probably just had to turn it on and come to find out it was not that it was because of the fact that the power steering rack was going when I bought it and they never said nothing about it they said it was nothing wrong with the vehicle but so did as is and that was in Aurora at Ford

No recall , many others with same problem World Ford in Pensacola service manager said complete failure of steering at 51k miles was “ normal wear and tear”!?? They have no parts and “ no eta” on getting parts. This is after rear suspension replaced!$40,000 SUV sitting in driveway. Never again FORD!!

Sounds like a need for a class action lawsuit and everyone should stop paying any money to ford ( if owing)untill they get parts and fix the problem. Funny how the suvs that are reliable are stop being made example front wheel drive Ford Edge

My 2016 explorer xlt is now having the same exact issue at 120,000 miles. I took it in to ford a handful of times when I first bought it under warranty due to a rubbing type noise when turning the wheel and they just kept packing it with grease. Well now I'm out of warranty as of 10,000 miles or so ago and my steering has became stiff. This is ridiculous. Perhaps not a recall because people haven't died from it?

2016 Ford explorer limited rack and pinion replacement at 140,000 miles. This should definitely be a recall. Only the dealers carry the part 3,500.

I also have a 2016 Explorer and the rack and pinion failed. Currently being repaired for around $3500. Only 136K on the vehicle. This should definitely be a recall.

I believe I'm experiencing the same problem with my 2016 explorer. It started 2 days ago. Hard to stear and noises at 72,000 miles. Ugh! Could this be related to the recall that was issued for the toe links? First dealer I called didn't seem to think so. Ugh! Thanks!

Our Rack and Pinion went last august on our way home from vacation. We have been left carless due to the shortage of parts and we were forced to get a tow home with 2 children over 2 hours away. This Should definately be a recall.

No recall as of yesterday when I made my NHTSA complaint. 125,000 miles, no real noises but the wheel is very hard to turn, jerky movement when I turn the wheel and it does not really come back to center. Took it to my trusted repair facility, there were no codes regarding the issue and they suggested changing the battery as mine was bad. No improvement. Still no codes but they tell me the rack is bad. How is it this many people have the same issue and neither Ford nor the NHTSA seem to care. This is both a defect and a safety issue. This problem in addition to the chipping/bubbling hood paint and damages rear air. This is my first and last Ford, I can promise you that.

My 2016 just went down with same issues 2 weeks ago (under Ford Premium Care+ warranty). In 2017 Ford recalled some 350K explorers from 2013 to 2017 for steering system failure resulting in damage to rear end joints. In 2021 Ford recalled 750K vehicles for failing cross axis joints in the rear end. I bought my Explorer in 2018, a full year after the initial steering system recall...and now 5 years and 156K later it went, and the cross axis joints that they replaced in 2021 have also gone.... And they can't get the parts. Been renting a vehicle for 2 weeks because they don't have loaners...and we still waiting on parts. It's bonkers man. Something like 1 million explorers from 2013 to 2017 have had critical steering and suspension failures resulting from bad racks. And it's not a full blown recall...and they apparently have no parts. I'm livid.

Just had my electronic rack and pinion steering replaced on my 2016 Ford Explorer with 80k miles. It cost me $2700. Had to get the car towed from a parking lot. Luckily it didn’t happen while I was driving. I could hardly turn the wheel.

I just had the rack and pinion go out in my 2016 Ford Explore with no warning. 60,000 miles and a 3,000 repair. Still no recall on this part. Has everyone reported their issues to the NHTSA since it’s a huge safety issue? Https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem#index

My 2016 Explorer with 129000 km had full power steering failure. Rack needed replacement as did inners as they were literally falling off the vehicle. Rack does come with inners but I had to replacein order to get it home. Called Ford and the said that my VIN wasn’t part of the recall. This is too much of a coincidence as so many 2016 have same issue. Had rack replaced at at shop $2700. Ford quoted $3500.

Just got off the phone with Ford dealer and the rack pinion is bad with 71,000 or so miles on it. I was hoping for info it was on a recall when they told me, not a big money bill.

My Daughter has just had her steering rack replaced on a2012 ford explorer, it had a recall for the same part back in 2015. She thought it might have been done under warranty for the replacement rack but know it cost $3200 in Alberta. Come on fords this is dangerous it could just fail without warning or crank your steering wheel left or right into on coming traffic and you can’t correct it back.

Haven't found a recall yet.my rack and pinion started making clunking noises when turning steering wheel at 80k. Ridiculous, to top it off new rack and pinions are only available for dealerships and thier inflated service rates. New units have to be programmed to your vehicle by the dealership, It is not economical for a local shop to pay for the software ti do it. Ford knows they have a c**p product and the monopoly on fixing it. Legal? Who knows these days, government used to protect consumers from thing like that but now just get paid by them to stay out.
