The 2016 Ford Fusion did not come from the factory with Apple CarPlay support. But in early 2017 Ford released a software update which made Apple CarPlay and Android Auto possible in Model Year 2016 vehicles equipped with the SYNC 3 system. The update could be made by up downloading the software From the Ford website to a USB drive and installing it manually by inserting it into the USB port in following the on-screen menu. Ford also made it easy for the tech savvy, allowing owners to automatically download and install through Wi-Fi. If the vehicle is connected to Wi-FiAnd an update is available, the system automatically downloads it without having to touch anything. The software is compatible with iPhone 5 and later models that run on iOS7.1 and higher.

Starting with 2016 model year vehicles, ford is loading apple carplay software onto the sync 3 infotainment system. If you have an android, you're covered with android auto as well.
