The 2016 VW Passat comes standard with a timing chain on the engine which is used to keep the timing accurate on the cam gears. A timing chain is a much better option than a timing belt because it is less likely to break and does not need to be replaced. Usually with a timing belt You will need to replace it every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, but a timing chain should be able to last well over 300,000 miles. Even though Your chain will last a long time that does not mean it is maintenance free, You should still check under the cover to make sure that it is tight and that Your water pump is working to keep Your engine cool.
