The 2017 Toyota Corolla uses a timing chain to synC-HRonize the position of the crankshaft and camshaft. The timing of the engine is vitally important to proper operation. As the crankshaft spins the connecting rods and pistons move up and down. As that is happening, the camshaft spins which causes the intake and exhaust valves to open or close. As the intake valve opens the air and fuel mixture is injected into the cylinder. The the spark plug ignites the fuel which forces the piston back down the chamber. Now the exhaust valve opens which allows the exhaust gases to exit the engine. If the timing chain become slack or stretched it could throw the timing off. When the timing is off the engine will miss and have trouble starting. If the timing is off too much the piston could smash into a valve destroying the engine.
