The 2020 Ford Explorer transmission problems are stuck in gear and jerks. The transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. Along with fluid changes, terrible sounds will come from the transmission. Old transmission fluid will be awful to the ear. A worn out torque converter will cause a headache. The transmission is one of the most critical parts of the vehicle. You will face issues at some point. Hard shifts could arise and that is not good. You could experience shudders. There may be jerking. The gears might become stuck. The transmission could slip. Delayed shifts will cause acceleration problems. If the transmission fluid leaks, that needs to be patched quickly.

I bought my 2020 Ford Explorer in late May of 2020. It just passed 8,000 miles. And seems to be having the exact problems discussed in this thread. It started making a strange noise around Thursday of last week, by Friday it was shifting funny in addition to the noise, Saturday the problem worsened tremendously. Today, I'm afraid to drive it bc it shifts really hard, or doesn't really want to shift at all. I'm taking it to the dealership in the morning of course. My question is this - how do we find out how many people have been affected by this same problem? What is Ford going to do about it? Is there or will there be a recall? How will a new transmission affect the value of my new SUV? How do I know this "new" Ford transmission isn't going to do the same thing in 3 more months. Does anyone know where to ask these questions? Thank you. And thanks for sharing your experiences. I wish you all well and hope you get a good resolution.

Just dropped my car off tonight due to transmission slipping. Manufactured 7/19. Purchased in February with 3k miles on it. Got the transmission cooler fixed a couple of weeks ago and started having issues with it slipping last week with 11k miles. Dropped it and the service guy basically told me they would have it a couple weeks and would get me a loaner. I asked if it would need a new transmission and he said it wouldn’t be the first one they had done. The only good news from my conversation with him is the replacement will NOT show up on a CarFax when I sell it. For anyone who has gotten a buy back offer, what did Ford offer you?

Purchased the 2020 Ford Explorer ST in late April with 50 miles on it. At 6700 miles the transmission failed. The dealership said it was against for motor companies policy to replace the transmission instead they would repair it. After two weeks of "the part is on backorder" and "we do not have an ETA at this time" the dealership agreed to replace the transmission completely. After 3 weeks I finally got my car back. Having a hard time trusting the vehicle now. A brand new vehicle should not have this happen. Especially one that was almost $60K.

Mine has 11700 miles on it. Climbing the gears as it gathers speed sounds like a remote control car when it switches gears. Its a high pitched metal buzzing sounds. Dropped off at service department this morning and 6 hours later (I had an appointment at 830, so I know that they have looked at it) and no update yet. I am fearing a new transmission after reading everyone's comments. Anyone know the sound I am talking about? I will update. Thanks

2020 Ford Explorer XLT AWD started struggling to go into reverse, at first dealer said they could not duplicate. I drove it and showed them, they recommended a valve body immediately. After a day with the car they are replacing the transmission, got a whole 9800 miles out of it. Does anyone know if the replacement transmissions are any better?

I have a 2020 Explorer Limited edition, with just shy of 6000 miles. Since I got it, I noticed that shifting from 2-4 gear was pretty rough, and jerky. A few weeks ago. I left the driveway, heard a thud when I put it in D, and it didn't move. I hit the gas harder, and it moved, but would not leave 1st gear. Got a check engine light. Turned it off, waited a while, tried it again, and it drove fine, but check engine light was still on. The car drove fine for a couple of weeks. The check engine light went off the next day. 2 weeks later, I took it out of the drive, put it in drive and again, it wouldn't leave first gear. Put the car back In the garage, waited a while, and it was fine. Called the dealer, and scheduled an appt because I can't have these serious issues continue. My concern was that they won't be able to duplicate the issue, and just send me on my way. Needless to say, they ran several diagnostics tests, and found some issues/codes. If you're having similar issues, ask your dealer to refer to TSB 20-2217. They performed a pinpoint test trace and found codes P062C, P2242. They then performed TSB 20-2217 again, and the codes were clear. Hopefully this helps. I can say, the transmission issues I've had all along with the jerkiness in the 2-4 gear are COMPLETELY gone, and no further issues with TRANS!

We purchased a 2020 Ford Explorer in December 2020. My Wife Sandy has noticed vehicle pulling hard when vehicle shifts, now recently winding in drive, and jerking. This past weekend used her car for errans, and noticed the issue, and sounded that transmission for sure. Sunday going to church, while backing out of garage, then putting back into drive, it hesitated trying to move pressing gas pedal. Next day went to Ford dealership in Green Cove Springs Fla., and wanted to see if they had any issues like this, and Sales Manager had never heard about this issue. I would think that they could of been more honest revealing these issues. From reading this blog, I think a lawyer would love to represent all of us. Ford has always had a good rep, but now they need to accept this failure, and step up to make this right to getting our trust back.

The 2020 Explorer is a pile of junk! Worst purchase ever. I've owned it for 3 months and it has been in the shop at least 10 times. Majority of these repairs were transmission complaints. My intercooler blew at 2000 miles. I have 3000 miles on this car and I am afraid to drive it because it starts to die around and lunge in low gears. Over 70 the car vibrates and shakes. My adaptive driving will randomly brake hard. Every time you take it in they say it's driving fine and give it back. My explorer also has a chassis issue because the more you drive the more the body moves and pops off moldings. My back hatch was sitting on my bumper and they claimed it was repaired by replacing the plastic piece on the bumper itself. Now it sits in an outward angle and they moved my tail light trying to cover this flaw. Took it to another dealership and they claim they can't repair it.

My 2020 Explorer with 5,000 miles on it has been sitting at the dealership since July 20. Today is day 60. No loaner car (though Ford told me they would pay for the rental.). I’m working with 2 people. One doesn’t have a clue and the other is great....but I haven’t seen a new car , yet. One told me to go pick a car off the lot. I told her no, because I wasn’t taking something I didn’t order. Check your state’s Lemon Law. I live in Florida and or LL is great for the consumer. I don’t know much about Class Actions suits but maybe it’s time to get one started.

I purchased the 2020 Explorer in April 2020. With 10,000 miles on it the transmission started bucking, banging into gear and jerking. At one point I was driving on the highway at 70mph, attempted to pass another vehicle, the rpm's ramped up to 7 and then banged into passing gear. The next day I dropped it off at the dealership. After investigating they explained major repairs were needed and there is a nationwide backlog of parts. That was Oct. 4th and today is Nov. 18th. They still do not have the parts needed and this particular dealer now has 5 Explorers waiting to the same parts!

2020 Ford Explorer Platnium purchased in December of 2019 and 8000 miles on it. Hesitating in drive and reverse then it gets worse left dead in the road after stopping at a stop sign. Vehicle wouldn't engage. Worked drive mode to sport mode to normal several times until it would engage. Made it short distance to home with sluggish transmission function. Towed to the dealer. I was told it was nothing mechanical within the transmission but something called "transmission selector valve". Part is on back order and will take upto a month to be shipped and possibly longer. This vehicle is so over engineered that a malfunction in one system it causes multiple sytem failures. I will be selling this vehicle as soon as possible.

We had our Explorer back to the dealership where we purchased it 3 times & kept getting run around after run around! And still the transmission was not fixed! I finally made an appointment at another dealership & they dropped the transmission fluid pan and said it was full of metal! They replaced my entire transmission before the vehicle has 8000 miles. Now I’m having problems going from drive to reverse! It continues to roll forward a good 5-6 ft before finally engaging and throwing the vehicle back! Biggest mistake I ever made was buying this overpriced Explorer

We have a 2020 Ford Explorer ST that we are now selling for a different vehicle due to unreliable transmission issues (along with a host of other, minor things breaking consistently like the emergency handles, sunglasses holder, glove compartment, window button stickers, etc etc). Our vehicle currently has 24k miles and is still under warranty. The first thing we noticed was the car would have a hard downshift when decelerating through 30mph (likely into 2nd gear). This was followed shortly by a burning smell Eventually downshifting at all was clunky andeven accelerating was a problem. We took the vehicle in the earliest they had a transmission appointment (over a month after calling when we noticed the first problem). We were told the torque converter was completely burnt and the part was on back order with no ETA for the next 4 months. Due to the expense Ford would have had to pay to keep us in a rental for 4+ months, they opted for a full transmission replacement, which was completed within 2 weeks. I have no faith the new transmission will be any more reliable than the original and with a cross-country move on the horizon we opted to sell the Explorer (for a Kia Telluride). This is upsetting because we loved the Explorer but unfortunately you lose faith in a vehicle when minor issues appear frequently then certainly with a major failure…all under 24k miles.

We bought our 2020 Ford Explorer on Jan 24th, 2020. In March, my wife backed out of the driveway and when she put in drive the transmission would shift out of first. We spoke with the dealership and they said we could have it towed. I arrvied home at lunch and checked it out. The transmissions started working correctly and Jacob (servide person) told me it was not necessaryto bring it up there if was working and that the computer must have fixed the issue. In Mid April the transmissionwould not shift gear aoutomatically or manually. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership, at which time they thought it wasa transmission cooling problem. The checked it out and sais it was not the transmission cooling system but Ford had put out a patch. Due to my concerns of my wife driving the car, the dealership (service mamager) drove the car for a week with no additional propblem. SInce then there was a cmera issue (still waiting on parts)and they installed an additonal patch. On July 12th, I was arrivingin Orlando when the transmission statrted shifting hard. I finished my business and I was returning home on State Road 417 when the wrench light come and the dash said to slow down and call the dealership. I pulled over at exit 41 and i called my dealership. After speaking with Brandon, I had it towed to Greenway Ford, where is still today. The service writer contacted me and indicated they are awaiting Ford's decision on how to proceed. We had the Explorer less than 6 months and had trouble withthe transmission 3 times. I am not weighing my options.

Seems ford used several versions of the 10 speed auto trans in this vehicle. Mine came with the l1mz7000m ( $ 3000 ) which failed at 6600 miles, replaced with " upgraded " transmission l1mz7000q ( 5 5000 ). The suffixes on this part go from a to r I'm trying to find out the differences and which ones are the most problematic. Also check ford program fsa 20b34 which replaces the flimsy transmission cooler with the better reinforced part l1mz7869h1x om 2020 explorers. I'm trying to find out why they didn;t replace this part when they replaced my trans. Especially when their own tech said the fluid was low. Many many of the flimsy coolers crack and leak.

My 2020 Explorer transmission went out at under 1500 miles. It just hit 21k miles and the tr Is blown again. I’ve taken it to 4 dealerships over the past 3 months because it was shifting hard and you could smell it burning. Each time they said it was fine. One guy said I’m paranoid. I kept getting alerts saying shift system fault and it wouldn’t go out of park... So I started taking photos of the alerts. They still said there’s nothing wrong. Also, my LCD screen turns black and nothing will work. You have to stop, put the car in park, turn it off,and open a door to get it to reset. So aggravating. I’ve called 7 Ford dealerships locally and nobody wants to touch my Explorer. Ford corporate told me to tow it to a dealer 28 miles away and they’d get me a loaner and get it fixed. 3 hours after it was dropped off at the dealership, I got an angry call asking me “who the hell said to tow it here, we are 2-3 weeks out on even looking at these piles of junk”... And that’s from the service manager.

Yesterday I drove it 2 milesup the road to the grocery store and it was shifting really rough and the rpms would get really high even when I was only going like 10mph. So I had an appointment set up to get it looked at this morning for the closest dealer, got there and was told "it's going to he 2 weeks before we can even look at it and we can give you a rental until it gets looked at" and was told to take it to the other dealer that's about 15 miles away. Well on the way there (only about 3 or 4 miles from the previous dealer) car made a really loud crank noise, rpms went to max and car just came to a complete stop.

Oh no! Mine is at the dealer now with 4300 miles and transmission problems. I was told there was an oil leak that is causing the transmission to grind. This isn't the first issue either. When I bought it, the first night out, the car alerted me it was hot and to turn it off. Ford told me "someone forgot to top off fluids when the car was delivered to the dealership." Then my windshield wiper fluid leaked out in one big rush. Then the transmission grinds with less than 5k miles. 1100 Miles and less than three months old. My transmission has generally shifted hard and erratically since I purchased it less than three months ago. Today, for the second time, it came to a slow stop in the middle of the road, jerked a few times, then took off again very slowly not exceeding 25 miles for the 11 mile drive home. During that drive I pulled over twice, turned the vehicle off, let it cool, then started it again in the hope it would get me home safely. It was an unnerving drive, and I was honked at to get a move on when my explorer struggled to move at the one traffic light in my neighborhood, and pulling over to cool and restart the engine had made no difference. The first time this happened the transmission eventually changed and the engine sounded normal again after turning a corner on a hill. This time turning corners did nothing to help change the transmission. Also the brakes have failed several times while backing up, forcing me to desperately tap them repeatedly in the hope they would engage. This is very unsafe. Hoping the explorer will get me to the dealer tomorrow morning.

Dealer, Dana Ford , had the car twice and gabe it back to me not repaired . Total over 100 days in a dealership. I will try to drive it like this till the end of lease as Ford cant do anything ! My 2020 Explorer Limited has 36,542 miles. Purchased November 2019 with 15 miles on it. Had the transmission coolant issue fixed October 2021. At the dealership now for the same issue, hard shifting from 1st to 2nd.

I just bought a 2020 Explorer ST. Bought it with 27,000KM. Transmission just went on me this morning after having it for 3 weeks. These are clearly unsafe lemons. I have young kids and don't want them in this vehicle at all. Not sure what I am going to do.

Purchased my 2020 Explorer in May of 2020. It was a "Loaner" and had 5k miles on when I drove it off the lot, still considered new. As soon as I drove it off the lot I noticed the vehicle started to jerk, so I took it back that next morning since it was already 10pm leaving the dealer. Dealer told me the vehicle is fine nothing is wrong and it's probably because "it's still fairly new". A year and 2 months later here I am, i've taken my Explorer back for the SAME issue a total of 9 times. Vehicle spun out on me mid highway when the transmission line broke. Everytime the vehicle was taken to the dealership they said the transmission system needed to be "updated" and sure enough they would call back the same day and say the vehicle was fixed and ready for pick up. Coming on here and noticing everyone having the same exact issue, i'm wondering what can be done. I do not feel safe in my car anymore especially being a new vehicle and spending so much on it. Doesn't seem fair.

We bought our 2020 Ford Explorer XLT and have had lots of problems. So far we have had the transmission replaced (at 3000 miles), cooling system repaired (at 3500 miles) and it is now doing the gear-jerk thing stated in this forum (at 7800 miles). We are waiting on parts to get this fixed. I have a case opened with Ford to see if they will buy it back. Has anyone else been successful in getting Ford to buy back their 2020 Explorer? If so, how did the process work?

My 2020 Ford Explorer has 17888.88 miles. I bought it with12000 miles and is still under warranty. Four days after purchase: transmission/coolant leak..They fixed that. January 21st: hard downshift so I took it starlight to dealer. They told me it is a valve block issue and is not drivable. Valve block is on back order. Now they say there are many explorers in line for this repair as it was a problem during manufacturing.

I had my 2020 explorer for 42 days before I noticed a hard downshift at 28mph and 64mph. After taking my car in 3x they narrowed it down to..... The transmission. The 6th and 7th gear shift isn’t allowing the clutch piston to return the spring snap ring! Now the parts are back ordered for at least 30 days. I filed a claim the first time I took it in bc I knew something was wrong. Now that the problem has been located I can’t get Ford to contact me back. I’ve called 4x with no answers or call back. This is absolutely ridiculous and Ford needs to be held accountable!

2020 Explorer with 6700 miles never really what you would call smooth shifting , just got much worse with loud jolting downshifts in low gears and clunky upshifts. Been at the dealer for a week now and problem is still being diagnosed. The car is basically undriveable and I didn't thimk it would make it on yhe trip to the dealer. This problem totally eclipses the dead battery= deep sleep mode the car goes into once a month. Total Ford family ( 14 fords over the past 40 years ) traded our great 2017 Explorer for this 2020 piece of junk

Had my transmission replaced on my brand new 2020 Explorer after 7 months of owning it with 10,000 miles. Dealer said it was a “coolant issue” but replaced the entire transmission. Took 2 months to replace. After getting it back with the new transmission, one day it rained really hard as I was driving home the screen went completely black and then came back on after I restarted my car. The next morning my front passenger seatbelt would not buckle. Dealer said to bring it in as they would most likely have to replace the ENTIRE SEAT. I drove it to the Mercedes dealership and traded it in on a new Mercedes after hanging up with the Ford dealership.

Just hit 3,900 miles on our new 2020 XLT Explorer and we are getting a wicked jolt when decelerating through about 28 mph. Dropped it off at the dealer this morning. After reading this thread I am concerned about the longevity of this transmission even if they fix the current issue. This is our first Ford. I hope we made the right decision in purchasing this one.

I lost all power at 70mph three hours from home. Ford roadside was not too helpful as they offered to tow it 15 miles. I paid $400 to tow it to home and they eventually reimbursed me although it was “a process” they replaced the transmission (at 9000 miles). I’m at 14,000 now and it starting to feel jerky again. I’d recommend taking it for service as soon as it shows signs to avoid getting stranded far away...like me. My 10th new car and first Ford...likely last. Absolutely love the car for its amenities, but a $60,000 car should not have these problems. I live for “buy American”....unfortunately, I’m out of reliable brands to chose from. Unfortunate this countries workmanship and pride has turned into just lining up for handouts.

Purchased 2020 explorer new had it one week went on vacation, 1400 miles from home (total 1600 miles on the veh.) total transmission failure, metal grinding, not shifting. Took a month for a new transmission. But Ford treated us very well. They paid for a rental and shipped our vehicle back to our local dealer.

Our transmission has gone out on our new 2020 Ford Explorer ST with only 3000 miles on the vehicle. Was told coolant fluid has mixed with transmissions fluid. Car was lurching and whining before it kicks into gear as others have described.

We have a 2020 explorer XLT with 5500 miles. Transmission started making a high pitched geary noise. Took it to dealer where it's been for 2 weeks. I am afraid the transmission is shot. They told me it was the transmission cooler and they were replacing. I have heard nothing since

I'm having similar issues. My 2020 Ford Explorer was purchased in April 2020 as a demo with 3000 miles. We put 2500 miles on it sense then. It never has ever shifted correctly, especially in the low end gears. On a trip to Tampa from Atlanta about 200 miles from home we got off the interstate to get gas and when getting back on the interstate I went to accelerate hard and all that happened was the engine redlined putting us in a very dangerous situation. I stopped and looked under the car and it was pouring transmission fluid from the gear box. Finally got my dealer in Atlanta to tow it home and they are working it now. If they don't put a new transmission in the car, I'm cutting my losses and dumping this car. Really unfortunate how they built up this SUV and how much of a disappointment it is. My other Explorer (2011) has had it share of bumps as well., I'm done with FORD FOREVER

Leased Ford Explorer XLT February 2020. At 440 miles the transmission won’t shift out of 1st or 2nd gear as reported by others. Had to drive home going 20mph. End of July the parking break would randomly activate and the screen shows “network communication error”. Explorer won’t drive at all. Was instructed to disconnect battery and reconnect . 30 minutes and 25 tries later the car and computer start up normally.Cancelled tow truck and took in for service : ford could not diagnose. 1.5 months later , it happens again. One week later it happens again . Going into service again this week and I’m applying for lemon law . Terrible vehicle so far . 6000 miles and I’ve been stranded 4 times once while stopped at intersection .Does not feel safe at all. And my backup camera is also glitching but that’s the least of my problems

I bought a new 2020 Ford Explorer and at 5,000 miles the transmission went out on our way home from vacation. We were stranded for 4.5 hours on the side of the interstate in the middle of the night. Ford said that they couldn't get a tow truck until morning, thank God for Geico who got us a tow truck and a ride into the nearest town. It was 23 business days before we got our car back, thankfully Ford is buying the vehicle back because of the Lemon Law. It has been a real headache though.

Not even 6500 miles and the transmission went out on me in the middle of no where Iowa. In the weeks prior, the parking break kept turning on and it sounded like something was trying to click or lock in the car. I assumed it was the lock system. Check for markings of drip under the car. Mine was covered in spots. When driving and changing lanes if it doesn’t seem like it’s getting that pick up or struggling to shift gears (which you can feel) then you shouldn’t drive it and call ford immediately. This seems to be a major issue.

This thread has some shocking stories. I bought my 2020 Explorer in november and we haven't been happy with the first 2 gears since week 2. I am now smelling transmission fluid on log drives and the ck engine light comes on. In dealership now and they just confirmed transmission related issues. At first, they diagnosed it as an O2 sensor issue. I have also owned 5 Fords and never experienced this issue. This is very unsettling

My 2020 explorer has had transmission issues since purchase in May. The intercooler already blew . It makes terrible noises. Shifts hard and sometimes it just revs with no response . Every time I take it in they continue to say it's fine and give it back after resetting the car.

My 2020 Explorer had 5200 mile on it when it started shifting hard started smelling a burning smell. Was told a coolant line broke. Left the dealership after getting it (fixed) and it started shifting up and down. Dealerdone a recalibration on transmission. That seemsed to fix all my probles for awhile. Now at 10000 miles its making another noise . Guess its time to trade it in

Our 2020 Explorer is going down a similar path. Its the XLT 4x4 201A package with towing. Should we attempt to repurchase something else? It only has 7000 miles and they are telling us it has transmission issues! They told me i needed to pick it up and DRIVE it until the parts come in . I was absolutely furious and called ford motor company for a better resolution! Haven't heard much back but what are youdoing? Getting something else? I dont want to keep it at this rate.

My 2020 ford explorer xlt has about 13K miles on it currently having the transmission replaced. It's very rough at shifting in the lower gears when accelerating and when downshifting to slow down. Was leaking out a bunch of fluid to and the flaw is you cant add fluid on your own or check the level and there is no light that comes on to warn you its low. And when accelerating it's making a real loud grinding noise and sounds like the transmission is winding up
